Scratch Delta Wing Design

by schraut5 | May 8, 2012 | (23) Posted in Projects

Hi guys!

Just wanted to share with you a scratch built delta wing that I designed. This is easily my favorite plane to fly and is very easy to build. It has a 30 inch wingspan, 11 inch root chord, 9 inch tip chord (including 2 inches of elevon), and 11 inches of sweep. I made it with a KFM2 airfoil to add some lift.  The plane, aside form the KFM, is made from a single sheet of dollar tree foamboard.

Motor: 1300 kV blue wonder from HeadsUpRC

Prop: 8x4

ESC: 18A
Receiver: Orange Rx
Battery: 1300 mAh 11.1V 3S lipo
Servos: T-Pro 9 gram

Let me know what you think! - Nick

Sweet, i'm probably gonna make one sometime

How do you think it will do with a 3000 kv 24 gram ?

I have never used a 3000 kv blue wonder before. As long as it makes enough thrust, it should be fine.

Could you post or send me the dimension for this wing? I'm a noob to scratch build and this looks pretty simple.

All of the dimensions are posted in the info section below the video. Additionally, if you go to my YouTube page I have a build video posted for this wing.

Does anyone know what the thrust angles should be? Are they neutral?

I just have it set up neutrally on here

Thanks, I have been looking for a good wing design to scratch build and this looks perfect. I like the simple construction with readily available materials.
I am gonna try to knock one out this weekend.

I went to home depot today and I couldnt find any 1/2 inch pink foam board. They had some in white that looked like eps? but it was 12$ a sheet. Do you think I could use dollar tree foam for the KFM2?

I think that using the dollar tree foamboard for the KFm2 would be just fine! Though I haven't tried it out...

The wind finaly died down this evening and I got a chance to maiden the wing. Power on, give her a toss and off she went. I really expected it to be a handfull but it was actually quite docile. This is my first wing and I am very impressed. You have designed a brilliant wing and I really appreciate you taking the time to share it with us. If anyone is thinking about building this you definately should. I also wanted to mention my observations. The plane tracked very well through all speeds, has a very nice glide ratio, stalls were a non event, and the cg was not as sensitive as I thought it would be. After I ran a couple 800 zippys through it I decided to try a 1200 and it flew equally well. Hats off to you sir and thanks again.

Excellent! Thanks!

I really like this plane. Super easy to build and fly. It is quite resistant too. I have flown it with a 2200 mah and it worked!

Well I completed my Schraut5 wing last night but its raining this morning so I cant maiden right now. Since I only had dollar tree foam to work with I decided to try something different. I went with the KFm-3 airfoil with steps at 50 and 75% of wing chord. I stripped the paper off by soaking in warm water for a few minutes and removing the paper in one sheet and using a wash cloth to remove the remaining glue and paper. I cant remember who pioneered that technique but it works really well. I then laminated the pieces together with 3M 45 spray adhesive, used a bamboo skewer for spar and covered the whole thing with clear packing tape. I used reinforced packing tape around the motor mount and leading edge. The combination of laminating the foam and covering with packing tape makes the air frame feel very light and rigid. The components used were Orange rx, blue wonder 1300kv motor, HXT 9 gram servos, zippy 800 3s, and thunderbird 18 esc. The all up weight including lipo is nine ounces and with an 8x4.3 prop its putting out about 80 watts. As soon as the weather clears I will maiden and let everyone know how it goes.

This is a great first build for beginners... I run a RC flight program in a local Boys & Girls Club and we're going to do a few scratch builds with the kids... this is an obvious no brainer for us to do! Thanks for having a build video as well... HUGE HELP!

does the 3000 kv blue wonder use an 8x4 prop? seems like a lot to me, but i have never used this motor

Hey man great wings, would you pls post the list of the components I need to build my own? I have no experience on building this things I only have an um j-3 cub, and an MCX2 heli. But I really want to star building my own stuff so I can really learn how the electronics work.

Thanks.

you think its ok to use a 1000KV motor and a 7x6 sport prop?

Depends on the motor. Can you post a link?

Brushless Outrunner Motor.
Kv - 3000rpm/v
Load [no prop]: 1.2a / 7.4v @ 21500rpm (0g thrust)
Load [7x4 prop]: 21A / 7.4v @ 8800rpm (380g thrust)
Load [8x3.8 prop]: 22A / 7.4v @ 8200rpm (430g thrust)

The specs from HK

I had both, but the 1300 kv broke the same day I put on the FT Flyer.

Hi There, just finished building the plane, great design and tutorial by the way. I am having an issue with CG. mine is 8.5 inches from the nose, this is to do with my bigger motor I presume.
I wonder if this is OK, and if it is not, I would like to know what I can do to fix this situation. should i bring the motor forward?
below are the parts I have used.

D2826-6 2200kv Outrunner Motor - 50 grams - mounted 28.5 cm from nose
1600mAh 3s battery -122 grams
30 amp esc - 22 grams
