TBS Discovery - REVIEW

by FliteTest | January 17, 2014 | (21) Posted in Reviews

We recieved this beauty from Team Black Sheep member Trappy when he stopped by to visit. Say hello to the TBS Discovery.

Designed as the ultimate FPV platform this gives you the option to use a GoPro, an on-board video camera, or depending on what setup you invest in, both!

This thing is strapped with four 900kv motors.

With everything attached this weighs more than a normal setup but that extra mass will help to steady your shots.

This is the shot from the GoPro but if you use the on-board camera your HUD will show battery usage, voltage regulation, etc.

Thanks again to Trappy for the quad and to you the viewer for making Flite Test possible. You are awesome!

Be sure to check out the store for tons of Flite Test goodies.

Well everything with DJI arms on it must suck mainly because they are too havy. The major downside of that crappy stuff is that the pcb is integrated into the frame, so one good crash and... 75$+.... I would choose Davids Tri setup over that TBS overpriced piece off bull****. I wonder how anyone with minimal multirotor experience can recommend that - already sold your conscience as well? It is just a TBS sales item - may be trendy for newbies with deep pockets but that will be the very end of it.

In my opinion it is a good approach for helping people getting into the hobby, the PCB helps them to get the wiring mystery away!

I own one and I can say that it is not as fragile as you say one good crash and its broken you say? Would a 200ft free fall count as a hard crash? Because mine survived that impact I actually hit so hard that the Naza needed a hard reset (AKA slamming it hard against a table) . To me that is pretty damn impressive. The crash was also not due to the discovery frame like im sure you are wanting to respond with. The DJI arms are make with weak points so they break in a crash to protect the rest of your electronics. You are paying the extra price for quality. Sure you can buy a new car for $10,000 but we all know that it is a piece of Sh**
When most people learn how to drive without hitting stationary objects they usually buy a nicer car than their moms 1993 ford escort. The same concept applies to hobbyists.
In conclusion don't be a negative Nancy.
Sincerely,
The world

All I am saying is that it is a useless rip off to finance CRAPPY. Any wood or alu copter will beat this. Helping to get into the hobby is the biggest joke of all. Anyway everybody has their opinions and that is mine.

I haven't watched the episode yet but i have had a read of all the comments, (i may be speaking out of tern but) this mutirotor was made for high up, long range FPV, and it is very expensive because of that, so why exactly are people going on about how S*** it must be when you obviously don't own one, or have flown one, COUGH COUGH (Crashpilot1000)!! STOP YOUR COMPLAINING!

CALM DOWN!
i don't mean to stop you posting you opinion i'm just saying that there are lot's of people out there who have huge success flying these things, but as you say wood or alu design could easily beat this, just someone hasn't done it yet, and this is what is available currently, (I'm not Chinese by the way and yes i did get that in my email (no offense to anyone)) sorry.

Learn to state your opinion after even getting close to one. How can you judge something that you have literally never seen.
Stop acting like the product is bad because blah blah blah.
You only hate it because Trappy is a part of it.
I will only take you seriously if you can provide more than a spectators opinion.

Well that's the point after doing copterstuff for years now, you don't have to buy junk anymore that is useless at the first sight.

Wow, a lot of negativity about this airframe. I wonder if its about the actual airframe or about Team Black Sheep. Support their outlaw style of flying or not they have a great product. I also thought it was expensive until I picked one up and looked at it. Now I own one. Its very robust and my favorite quad. As far as price I think its right on the money for a superior product. Besides I have Align helis that cost 3 times as much as this quad. No one is out there bashing Align. Whats the difference? You get what you pay for.

This looks like a decent setup for either the beginner who wants the all in one package, or the expert that wants to film in a similar manner to Trappy. If I had the money, I'd buy one in a heartbeat, but everyone is invested in this hobby at a different level.

In other words: Did anyone notice the large piles of dirt on the right side of the driving range? Is FT expanding or is this another business getting ready to go up right next door?

This is the first post I've seen where the comments are so negative. This is not the FliteTest way.

Amen to that. David said it best "other forums have trolls, we have care-bears".
'Crashpilot1000', you can have a negative opinion, you've been given that right, but be respectful, otherwise keep your opinion to yourself.

People have there opinions, and sadly when you (others/me) ask why they judge by the cover, (+they don't own one) you don't get a very nice response, it's kinda like the Microaces review, David didn't like it, and that was his view, but at least he could explain why in a social way. I would buy one of the TBS discovery pro's if i had the money, for FPV and Ariel photography because there really isn't any strings attached to it, (addons, other things needed) once you get the package, you just got to build it and away you go.
