Testing DIY GoPro Hero 3 lens protector

by allthatido | April 13, 2013 | (8) Posted in Projects

This is the DIY gopro lens protection I created for my gopro hero 3 edition. It has been inspired by the FPV manuals layer lens.

The lens cover is built with three materials..depron/biofoam at the center, soft balsa wood as the second layer and 2 mm wood laminate as the third layer. A carbon fiber decal is put over it to add oomph and added protection. The clear screen is a standard cell phone screen protector.

Let the pictures speak for themselves..if there is enough interest I can create a dwg template for the same.

Well here is the testing video. The camera survived the crash with no scratches on the lens :)

The full case is close to another 89 grams while the lens protection cover I made is 9 grams :) So you save 80 grams

I like this idea! Do you think a 1/8th inch sheet of lexan would work instead of the balsa, carbon, and screen protector layer? Just trying use materials I already have.
