FT Duster

by FliteTest | August 26, 2013 | (54) Posted in Reviews

Inspired by Dusty from the Disney movie 'Planes', Josh created the FT Duster! A scratch built character plane to go along with David's FT Slinger plane.

Designing off of the air frame of the Baby Blender, Josh created a new design in this scratch build.

David's FT Slinger design was inspired by Ripslinger from the movie Planes.

These character planes have their own unique looks as well as their own flying characteristics.

Both the FT Duster and FT Slinger are both swappables.

Josh took design inspiration from the Spitfire as well, hiding the dihedral and added a pressure fitted landing gear. This airplane is also equipped with flaperons (flaps and ailerons).

The canopy is removable, giving you access to the electronics.

David made a Classic Racer style airplane with his FT Duster.

This is simply a fun airplane to fly and without the canopy it has its own look as well!

It's a simple bank and yank airplane and is very stable in the air.

The FT Duster offers all kinds of basic maneuvers in the air along with very gentle stalls.

The versatility of this plane, we were able to tow a glider into the air!

The plans and build for this airplane will be available very soon!

Thanks again for all of your support! More photos and discussion in the forum!

Great Job, you should offer both of them together as a combo deal if you make the kits! I love that field you guys are flying at wish I had a site like that to fly at!

That combo deal sounds cool. They go together and they already have the swappables 3pk so this would work awesome.

Terrific! I've been checking all day and was not disappointed. The open cockpit version was exactly what I've had in mind all summer . I've spent a lot of time trying different paint methods without success. Probably will try some color but then clear tape.

Now all you guys need is the 2nd type of wings and the removable crop duster hose release thing that drops the vitamulch. that would make it sooooooo much cooler and even more recognizable at the flying field. this can be is another video though like the ft cruiser one.

Very cool projects, David and Josh- you did a fantastic job! I can't believe the tow gliding went so well after you got the towline to cooperate- this plane has so many uses. I wouldn't mind a speed build kit, but I am sure I could scratch build it as well. Keep it up and can't wait for the build.

Did I see orange monocoat trim sticky back, what next colored box tape as per EA which I keep defaulting to after failed painting attempts. I am an old time builder but can't get the hang of painting foam board, last attempt the fb curled up but paper stuck ,Minwax causes my paper to come of too easy at edges. Very brittle.

Guys yet another brilliant plane that look like it will be a home with the beginner and the experienced pilots hanger! they look great flying together and I can't wait to see the build video of the Duster. I can understand about the three bladed prop lacking a bit of power, but it looks so good and would be great for a trainer.
Regarding making a speed build kit are you not going to be affected with copyright issues?? Just a thought...
Keep the episodes coming.... Any luck on sorting out the postal costs issues to Europe yet? I would love to buy some of the kits but the postal costs just kill it...

Duster is awesome. I can see now that I'm going to be busy building this winter. I love that he is small in size, easier to carry around in your car/truck. Can't hardly wait for the build video and plans to make their appearance on Flitetest. Once again, for those that have trouble with building scrachbuilds, a Speed Built Kit would be wonderful for both Slinger and Duster. Also please think about offering them as a twosome package.

How did the plane act once the flaperons were activated? I always program it into my builds but with such a deep chorded wing I'm afraid it'll just amplify the pitch down effect.

I can't wait for the build video, I've been looking for a nice low-wing toon scale plane that dosn't require the "beefy" power pod! Amazing design and build.

OK, your FT Slinger and FT Duster planes are so darned cute, and apparently fly so well, that I had to go see what could have inspired these two models. I just got back from watching Disney's "Planes" and must say you have done a magnificent job of capturing the two "stars" of that movie! It's an aeronautical version of "The Little Train That Could", as I'm sure most here already know, and I will be anxiously awaiting the two kit availabilities and build videos. You are revolutionizing the e-flight arena with your foam-board planes as much as foam did, and my heartiest congratulations to Flite Test for blazing the way in this "new" material in a very entertaining, educational, and enjoyable manner. Kudos to you all!

Could you maybe do a review on the fenix chuck gliders from lazertoys? they look really affordable and glide nice. Maybe a small one like in this episode (the fenix 45) and a bigger one like a 100 since it is in between the other two (the 80 and 120).

Yeah, im curious too ! They keep calling it "The Beef". Id like to know the thrust they get out of it. So that I can get a high KV motor on 2 cell Equivalent. Or atleast the weight of it. Im thinking of using my Turnigy 4400 kv 450 heli motor, 900 grams of thrust on 6x4 apc prop.2 cell setup.

I too was frustrated by the lack of information until I saw an ad for lazertoyz powerpacks over to the right.
I think it is Emax GT2215-09 1180KV 2.25 lbs thrust with a 9x6 emax prop
(http://www.lazertoyz.com/Swappable-Spit-Powerelectronics-pack-THE-BEEF-_p_441.html) note that the beef power pack for the versawing/ft3d uses a different motor and prop

Flitetest crew, if you are willing to produce a build kit of exactly the Dusty you got, I'll buy right away cause it looks great. If there are copyright issues then at least a detailed build episode for Dusty including painting so I can try to make one just like it. Thank you guys, I always look forward to new episodes especially reviews of new planes of various manufacturers. This helps me determine what to buy. Flightdeck

I know this is an old thread - and it has been asked - but here I go. Is the color from packing tape? and could a flight camera be added to the canopy and not affect flight? Recommendations on tape and camera would be cool. Thanks

yeah! I build mine shortly after it came out, and I so wanted to fly it, but only on a day without wind. Finally now in March it was time to maiden it, and I am blown away. After a little trimming issues it flew amazingly! So far Bloody Wonder was my favorite, but this one challenges that place. Turns on a dime, pull itself out of everything, and even took a much heavier battery for endless flying power. Cheers Arend

Well, I built the Duster - painted it and decorated it to look just like Dusty to the great pleasure of my 4 1/2 year old grandson! He wanted to go right out and fly it but it was miserable weather for a while. Today I decided to take the maiden flight without him just in case of a disaster... Turned out to be a good idea. This little guy is FAST! I'll prop it down, figure out how to get the wrinkles out Dusty's nose, and will give it another go!
All in all, a great model! The foam core construction let my grandson be involved in the build and he is hooked for life now!

My son bought me the speed build kit for Christmas.
I still need to buy the power pack & batteries & etc.
And a receiver (for my Taranis QX7).
Maybe you could add a 3-Blade prop & spinner to the "Store" page
for the FT Duster.
I haven't flown RC for about 25 years, and flew Slope gliders back then, so I need to re-learn a lot.
