To the Flite Test Community,

Since the creation of the MESArc ELITE after school program at the neighboring high school, a new tradition has been formed to create a scaled up version of one of the students past or future designs.  The project invovles both programs and the aircraft is worked on during both class time slots.  Last year was our first attempt at scaling up our MF-Hornet to 200 percent.  Although some what successful, it brought on new challenges and learning opportunities for the students due to scaled version, for example different power systems, measurement, and structural approaches.  Here was last years MF-18 build and maiden.

The first day of school this year brought tons of buzz around what aircraft was going to be scaled up this year. After great ideas were being thrown back and forth, we wanted to make one entirely new and not from our current line of designed aircraft.  ELITE student Ashton, is currently working on a revised MF-22 Raptor to rival and put an end to our current Raptor in production.  It looked great on paper, so we decided to go for it blowing it up 200 percent, as seen in the CAD file below.

The trick was making sure we calculate the best we can the CG (center of gravity) on the aircraft to give us the best chance during our maiden, throwing this sized plane around was not going to cut it as we would more in likely have destroyed it during test throws.  So with some calculations, and making a 1:2 scaled version of the aircraft, we were able to test fly it to find its CG, the students then doubled it for the final craft and we were then ready for installing electonics.

The 18's power setup was not enough, this year we wanted to make sure that the aircraft was going to have enough power to maintain a comfortable flight experience.  Below is the power specs we installed on the aircraft.

  1. 4 Metal Gear 12+ gram servos: https://store.flitetest.com/tough-tilt-servo-es3154-emax/
  2. Tons of extensions: https://store.flitetest.com/20cm-servo-extension/
  3. YSplits: https://store.flitetest.com/servo-y-harness/
  4. "2" 85amp ESC: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__10331__Turnigy_Brushless_ESC_85A_w_5A_SBEC.html
  5. "2" Monster Jet Motors: http://graysonhobby.com/grayson-hobby-monster-jet-2400kv-firewall-mount.html
  6. 6 cell Lipo: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__10300__Turnigy_3000mAh_6S_40C_Lipo_Pack.html
  7. Good TX/RX setup

Both classes had a ton of fun building it, and of course, signing it!

The plane came out great and the maiden was even more exciting, first with the HS students, and then after break the middle schoolers will have a shot at seeing their community build fly. Since this aircraft flew great and the build was easy, we decided to release the plans for it for you guys with some SPACE can build with a group of friends to enjoy,

There was some talks of building this jet for Flite Fest aircombat, now that would be awesome!

As always, thank you for supporting the MESArc Program,

Didn't see any performance during your flight. Short bursts of the throttle was all.... Two GH Monster jets!!! That plane would fly like a rocket and sound like a NASCAR coming down the straight away. Should have done AT LEAST one low level fly by!!!! Chickens!!!!!
