Hello Everyone,

Miles from BackyardRC here again with another of our 3D printed parts. Today we're sharing our 3D printed quadcopter motor mount. This sleek mount is designed for 1/2 x 1/2 inch square dowels and based around HobbyPartz ExceedRC 2200 series motors. But in reality it will work with any 16mm bolt pattern motor.

Checkout the full rite up over at BackyardRC.wordpress.com and download the model to print on your own on Thingiverse!

Hope you enjoy and happy flying!

How does the plastic hold up?

Great! I am super happy with how the mounts are holing up. They are rather beefy and could probably be trimmed down a bit to save a little weight but overall they are a great mount.

I have designed a stubby version as well the only uses two bolt hole to connect to the boom. They are just as rock solid and about 20% lighter.

Thanks for the interest!

Hello Dingo,

In some ways yes and in some ways no.

If you are looking for a simple flat mount plywood is the way to go (especially if you can laser cut it). But if you are looking got something with a bit more shape or style printed plastic is just as strong. You defiantly have take print grain into account but this is not much different from ply.

Over on my blog I have a picture of one of my mount after a HARD hit. It defiantly cracked right along a print layer. Check it out (about 2/3 down the post: http://backyardrc.wordpress.com/2013/08/13/3d-printed-quad-build/

Thanks for the question!

so you can design strength in by looking at the grain and using fillets in the design stage, interesting!! is it expensive

Hey Dingo,

It is a bit expensive to get printer (but not as bad as it used to be). I have a Cude 3D (http://cubify.com/cube/index.aspx?tb_cube_learn) that I picked up for about $1250 from staples (http://www.staples.com/Cube-3D-Printer-Silver/product_201876)

If I had a bit more money I would have gotten the MakerBot Replicator (http://store.makerbot.com/replicator2.html). It's all around a better printer.

The plastic spools are $25-$50 and last a rather long time. All four motor mounts, four legs, upper and lower center hubs all could fit from one spool with plastic to spare.

If you like I'll print and send you stubby motor mount (only two bolt holes for the boom) I just ask in return that you write an article on FliteTest reviewing 3D printing. I'm not looking for an endorsement or anything. Just an honest opinion. I'm a big fan of 3D printing and curious if others feel the same way.

I'm not sure if there is a way to send private messages but if there is and you'd like a print send me your address. Thanks.
