Foldable QuadFrame

I have been thinking of making a foldable Quad after my manager who also fly's Quads said it would be nice to be able to take one on holiday and not be too big. After various ideas this is the one i think has most promise as it uses available parts and is cheap to make, and folds into a long Cylindrical shape.

The parts are:

 4 x 450 size Helicopter Tail booms .

4 x 12mm Plastic Pipe clamps.

4 x 15mm "U" shaped Aluminium cut to 15mm wide, and drilled to match the height of the pipe once in the clamp.

A bottom part of the Quad's frame, this is a piece of plywood 100mm x 100mm which has a woven cloth on it which in turn has been impregnated with epoxy. This has been done on both sides and the gloss look is achieved by laying a acetate sheet on top whilst the Epoxy is still wet, and then removed once it has hardened.

Construction..

Drill the board and place the Pipe clamps as close to the apex of the board as possible, using M3 hex head and use lock nuts to tighten them in place.

The place the "U" brackets inline with each clamp drilling them close enough together but not so close as to interfere or restrict the motor cables i hope to pass down the hollow tube to the motors.

you should then have something looking like this, align the tubes with each clamp and press home, ensure you have all tubes aligned and then tighten all nuts.

Here you can see the ease of popping the tube off and thus giving you a compactly packed model ready for your Holiday :-).

This is as far as i have got , but i will be putting on the next layer on the frame and here i will house the ESC's, and see if the wires can go through the tubes without chafing etc.. watch this space... :-)

Here is an amazing design I have been following for the last several months. The fellow is well into the delivery stage of units people may wish to purchase.

Hi, I used to live in Zurich and Jago and i met there, but i am in Munich now but he is still a good friend of mine. He is an amazing engineer and we have had a good exchange of ideas when we were in Zurich. I have a CNC machine too and hope to cut out his foldable quad, but it is still larger than mine above.

Hi Jake, Thanks it is just a personal record of what i have done, and if anyone else finds it useful all the better. I watched your bigfoot video very good, i think i need to try a 'H' quad soon, they look like you can put a lot of gear on them..
