Repair Split Carbon Fiber

Have you ever had a problem with your carbon fiber splitting or you just needed to fasten two objects together but just didn't have an easy way to do it? Well, I have too and here is a tip that I learned from someone along the way.

Materials needed

  1. Fishing line (preferably a fibrous one and not a synthetic mono-filament)
  2. Thin CA glue

To begin, if you are fastening together two metal objects, I would recommend that you scuff up the surface of the metal with some sand paper to help the CA adhere better. It will work without doing this though.

Next, wrap the fishing line around the area in which you would like to make your "Band Aid" or where you would like to join your two objects. Wrap the line thoroughly until you have about three layers built up.

Then use the thin CA glue to coat the fishing line and let it set. Tada! you have now repaired your split carbon fiber or fastened your two objects together!

Here is an example of a "Band-Aid" that I made to fix my split carbon fiber landing gear on my 3DHS SHP.

Here is an example of how I used this to fasten together two pieces of steel that I used to make some landing gear.

Good idea to use fishing line, I normally use thread but fishing line would be stronger.

Yeah, I have also used thread before. I found that it was actually harder to get the CA glue to soak into the thin thread though. Maybe it was just the thread that I used. From my experience, I like using fishing line better than thread.
