Bat Bones FPV Project - Overview and update

So here we are!

The Bat Bones is built, flight controller KK2.0 running firmware 1.6 is tuned and now controlling the superb Bat Bones tricopter. It is now in it's first configuration and will have many changes and modifications over the course of this RCTV-UK series. In the builders review (see video in related videos below) we did not really talk enough about the items used or how the Bat Bones kit goes together.

First up I would like to tell you just how cool I think this kit is.... I remember seeing this on a flite test episode a long time ago now thinking "Hmmm what a cool looking frame".

Well not only does it look cool but it builds cool and flys cool too!

We bult it in about 4 hours from start to finish. The kit snaps together very easily once you have popped out the delrin parts. Everything fits together nicely and the bolt pack that is used to bolt top and lower decks together is really good quality (one of my pet hates is finding cheap hardware with a kit)

This is a great kit to build with your kids or if you don't have kids just build a couple with a buddy. You'll enjoy the build and will have a couple of really cool tricopters whan you're done.

As you can see form the picture below we decided to have a pair of really bright LED headlights on ours which looks really cool at night (just don't try and hover nose in or you will be blinded) These kick out an incredible amount of light and run perfectly of a 3cell 11.1v set up. I personally think these are one of the best bargains to be had at the Hobby King store. They are just a few dollars each and really do work a treat!

We have been looking around at motors and ESC's for a while now and had not really found what we were looking for so when Pro Flight UK offered to send us some of there new motors and ESC's we jumped at the chance. The ESC's are nice and slim and the response time of them is very fast making them a perfect candidate for the Bat Bones. The multi-rotor optimized adapters are superb quality and are the perfect size for the Graupner E-Props we're using (no adjustment needed). These motors feature a short shaft and improved bearings over their same sized counterparts.

If you are gonna do FPV you're gonna need a video TX and the Immersion RC transmitters are one of the best. Our Flite Test FPV Project Bat Bones is going to be doing some hardcore FPV so UHF and a different frequency will be needed. This is perfect for almost everything we are going to do now though, it will be more than enough for anyone doing normal FPV and if you find you need a little more check out Everything FVP http://www.efpv.co.uk/ as they have some super cool very affordable antennas for this set up.

We hope you are enjoying the RCTV-UK Projects. If there is anything you think we could be doing better please let us know. If you could rate the article here too that would help us judge how we're doing.
