Batbone Maiden in France (on vacation)

by Johan | September 22, 2013 | (0) Posted in Just Fun

I took my freshly built Batbone on vacation to France. It's maiden flight in the hills of France was a bit bumpy, but I already expected that.

After setting up too quickly I had the rear and right propeller switched, resulting in a tricopter unwilling to lift (I have the right motor setup to turn CCW).

Once I got that figured out, the batteries had drained apparently, since during my first real flight (wow adrenaline rush!) the voltage alarm kicked in after 20 seconds...

I landed in way too high grass, killing one of the props.

During a later flight I ran into a tree (tricopter magnets...) splitting one of the booms. With no appropriate glue on hand, I left the repair for when we got home (done !)

Config:

  • Batbone frame,
  • KK2 controller,
  • 3 x 15 AMP turnigy Multistar ESC,
  • 3x turnigy 2822 1275 Kv motors
  • Turnigy voltage alarm (plug into balacing connector)
  • Recommended metal gear tail yaw servo
  • 2200 mAh battery
  • Turnigy 9 Ch receiver
  • Keychain 808 version #16 onboard cam (no FPV, just recording 720p).
  • LED strip on tail for orientation.

My maiden as well, first ever RC experience. Hope you like it!

PS, just to be clear, I did not use the FPV transmitter, just used the keychain cam in recording mode (dont't go over the top on your maiden flight).

Addition: PS, those LED strips are bright :)
I think I'm going to add them to the sides of the rear boom as well ...

Cool Video! I also maidened my batbones last weekend and finally got it set up the way i wanted. Third battery and my tail prop breaks off about 50 feet up... Obviously it went down hard. Broke two booms, a motor mount, and cut a few wires... Got it rebuilt, but never trusting nylon props again on my multi-rotors...

Thanks !
Maidens are thrilling, my heart was beating like crazy..
Hmmm, your experience makes me reconsider my props. That is nasty damage with a prop that breaks mid-air.
I broke one while landing in thick (straw-like) grass.
I also split a boom when hitting a tree later on my third flight (see https://vimeo.com/75349516).
Love to see a video if you get the chance to make one :-)

Johan,
Trying to get the MESArcFF's team Batbone up and running but finding it hard to get it to even hover. Every time we try and give it some throttle the unit just flips over violently breaking props and you name it. Is it possible you can send your KK2 settings along with prop direction so we can reference yours?

Hi MESA rcFoam Fighters,

First of all: loved your latest video! What a great initiative and you've got a great setup going!

My PI settings on the KK2 are stock, so I have not changed anything yet.

I have the props setup according to the KK2 instructions:
left front: CW
right front CCW
rear: CW

Steps taken:

- checked the directions of the motors (without props)
- calibrated the receiver (Turnigy gx with er9x firmware)
- did the KK2 receiver test
- my ESC's don't require/don't allow calibration, so cannot calibrate those.
- I did the KK2 sensor calibration on a level desk (to tell the KK2 what is level)
- Then I put the props on (so 2 normal props and 1 CCW prop), but in my excitement I swapped the rear and right - front props, this resulted in this (CCW of CW motor and vice versa):

If this resembles your troubles, check the prop assignment.

Also check if the props are not upside down (although that results in less lift, no flipping)

Hope this helps!
