E-Flite P-51D Mustang 1.2m - Release!

Everyone loves a good Mustang. Even as someone who grew up in the UK where the P-51 wasn't a national icon (here it was all about the Supermarine Spitfire), there's just something special about this airplane: its shape, the gleaming metal, that sweet intake. Recently, Horizon Hobby came out with a new version of their BNF 1.2m Mustang, complete with invasion stripes and SAFE technology installed.

This model is pretty much the same 1.2m P-51 Mustang that E-Flite has been producing for a couple of years now, but taken up a gear. The addition of Horizon's signature SAFE technology makes a plane like this way less intimidating for the less experienced pilot.

If you don't have as many hours on warbirds, using the SAFE system which restricts the inputs on your sticks and self-rights the airplane may be a good call. You can use one of the channels of your radio to assign this function. This way, all you'll need to do is flick a switch and a metaphorical safety net will catch the plane before it plunges into the dirt. If you want to learn more about this, check out Horizon's video featuring the new P-51.

Looking at the details of the model, it's clear that E-Flite has done a great job capturing quite a unique scheme. As a little historical trivia, the 'invasion stripes' seen on many Mustangs, Spitfires and other aircraft in 1944 were used to provide easy recognition for Allied forces during and after D-day.

The model really does capture this style.

Looking closer up, the electric retractable landing gear is well detailed and provides an authentic motion when operating them. Modelled drop tanks and flaps are also included.

The bubble canopy of the 'D' model looks fantastic.

If you're looking to add a brand new warbird to your collection, this one may well be a great choice. Head on over to E-Flite's website to find out where you can get your hands on one. If we get the opportunity to fly one of these Mustangs for ourselves, we'll make sure that we report back with more info and our in-depth thoughts.
