easy and cheap decals

Recently my neighbour gave me a load of sticker paper in different colours. He said that because he didn't use them, he wanted me to have them to use for my planes.

Because the decals on my Bixler 2 were mostly gone I decided to cut a few pages into strips and put stripes on my bixler, here's the result (notice my homemade cockpit, I lost the stock one while doing nightflying, if asked I can try to make plans )

A little while later I wanted to make the Ft-racer and realised after building it that I wanted to put some decals onto it. As I wanted to do something a little more advanced I decided to take one of the yellow pages and print something on it. If I only had had the idea to put these pages into the printer earlier I could have made my Bixler alot better looking :/ the end result of the racer plane is looking pretty sweet.

After seeing the Ft-bloody wonder episode I really wanted to make one to do streamer combat and so I did. I went with the following setup:

1300Kv motor

10Amp ESC

500mah 20C 3s LiPo

With this setup I can go vertical and get flight times up to about 4minutes and because the batteries are this small, I can charge one pack while I'm flying and it will be done charging at the moment that I come in. The only problem I am facing is that I cannot fly nonstop due to heat issues XD.

After testflying it I got the idea to make it look as good as it flies. Having alot of stickerpaper without any colour (just white) I got the Idea to print some nice decals onto it. So I searched some pretty nice images on Google.

I found these nice flames and turned them into a Word file

At this moment I put some paper into the printer and made a test print. It looked pretty nice so I printed them on the stickerpaper.

After printing them I started sticking them onto my Bloody Wonder

starting to look sweet

now I only have to wait until my flybuddy gets here so we can fly this badboy

I have used this method many times. The only problem is that the ink will run when wet. I spray the stickers with a clear varathane after they are installed. Another way to protect the stickers is to put clear packing tape on the sticker before installing them.
Easy and inexpensive way to print anything you want! I used this method to cover a super cup with bubbles and the logo of my Carwash.

Good one! Used the same technique on my Ripslinger. Works like a charm and cost almost nothing (well....besides a few hours of MS-Paint/Photoshop etc ;-)
For me it was real fun to design, print and cut. And no fuss with water decals.

I've got a couple sheets that's been in a desk drawer forever, now have a new purpose! Slick diy stickers! Weight is probably even less if you peel the paper off the foamboard, wouldn't have to worry about polyurethane coating for water-proofing, etc. The only thing I'd maybe wonder about is the longevity of the printer ink after lots of flying and grass landing.

you can waterproof the ink by spraying hairspray onto the plane after sticking them on the plane, it's cheap and adds little or no weight ;)

it depends on how many paper you use ;)
With printed decals each paper weight about 12 grams and I used 5 papers on this airframe. it coms to about 60g's extra

Ah, the trick is to use Other People's Paper, "OPP", like you were able to. I bought up a variety of tape for adding zip to the look of the FT planes and these are cost effective. I bought, but haven't tried, the Testors printable water-transfer decal kits and the cheapest I got them was $12 a kit. You only get three sheets of decals in the kit, and they are much smaller than standard printer paper, probably less than half a standard sheet (US 8.5" x 11").
After reading your article, I googled and found this material on the internet: Grafix Clear Adhesive Backed Inkjet Film, 8 x 11 inches
MP Code #MP-10917-002.
As mentioned by others, here, you have to "fix" inkjet inks after printing. The Testors kits have a rattle can of fixer. Hair spray sounds like a cheaper alternative, I will have to give it a try.
Cheers - Peter
