To the Flite Test Community;

As we continue our journey of researching and developing an Aeronautics program for the 2018 brand new Innovation Center of St. Vrain Valley Schools, if you haven't checked out that episode, here ya go;

We were approached last week about filming indoor shots, shots that a Mavic could not do, something smaller.  So without breaking the bank, I told the students what would be a platform that we could use that could open the door for the industry element of our program around indoor videography. We came across a few, but the platform that we kept coming back to was the DJI Spark. So we decided to get one to train the students on and to do our first job with.  The students are going to be filming a media piece along with our counterpart group called IC Studios for Vergent products, so stay tuned for that and we will let you know how the DJI really held up and what the final product looked it.

In our first week with it, we took indoor shots of the Innovation Center and they came out pretty good.  Now to make it seamless we turned off the sensors so it can fly through the doors and get close to hanging objects.  It did, however, produce a lot of noise, so with clients to take a shoot without interrupting production, this could cause some issues.  The easiest test for the kids was to take it outside, where we had a lot of fun!

During the peak of the day where the sun was out, the Spark took a great stock footage.

This was the shot around 4:00 in the afternoon, might have to start taking over the automatic settings and adjusting for a brighter shot.

Alec and Jonah getting the Spark figured out.

A feature that we already knew about the Spark, but still tried it out, filming with a strong roll without that axis capability does hurt for shot sideways.

Here is a shot at 4:30 into the sun setting, you can see it getting darker on the imagery.

Shooting north it lightens up, but still a great shot.

Jonah took a shot at filming the Opterra.

Cool shot of the Opterra by the spark.

The activtrack is pretty cool too.

All smiles!

The only downfall of the spark that the students complained about was the lag in video feed, and maybe that is a user error.  However, we have found that the range on the Spark is really short, and it was never as clean on the video signal, so it was hard whether or not you got the shot.  So even though this is not a comprehensive review, and its not like we wanted to present it this way either for the product has been out for some time now, the kids said save your money and get the Mavic!  Still though we are not ruling the Spark out as we will be testing it further in upcoming jobs.

Thank you guys for watching and supporting the program, your feedback as to suggestions on where the kids should go is instrumental, so keep it coming!
