FT-22 Raptor - PROJECT

by FliteTest | January 13, 2014 | (52) Posted in Projects

If you've been with us for a while you might recognize this beauty, but with a few new additions.

Say hello to the FT-22 Raptor!

This is the first design in the FT Simple Series. For you swappble fans out there, don't be sad! There will still be many more swappables to come.

We based this off our original F-22 design (above) but with all the improvements you could ask for.

The front scoops created by the belly plate provide excellent cooling for your electronics, and it looks cool!

The nose is actually made completely from foam which drastically increases the durability. No more wrinkled poster board noses!

There is plenty of space in the cockpit for your battery or whatever else you guys might want to throw in there.

To reduce rod flexing, Josh noched out a small piece of foam attached to the side plate and ran the rod through. No flex, no hassle!

To go along with our decal kits we have new bigger logos color matched and ready to go!

Also, the first 250 people who buy a speed build kit will also get a FREE small decal. Our thanks for being awesome!

Even though this plane is technically a jet, don't let that intimidate you! It's extremely easy to build and it will only go as fast as the motor you put in it.

The FT-22 boasts great high-alpha, and acrobatics are no problem.

As always, fly with a friend (or three)!

Sadly, we still haven't figured out how to make the planes tree-proof.

As always, we want to thank you guys for supporting Flite Test. We wouldn't get to do what we do if it weren't for your help.

As always we have free plans and a build video on the way!

Let us know what you think! Leave a comment bellow or chat it up in the forums!

Wait, so where's the custom FliteTest plans of this??? I don't want the old EPP plans. ....Or are you guys wanting to make some $$$$ off the speed build kits first before releasing the plans??

These look awsome! I was wondering if you recomend these for beginners to fly. Also I wanted to know what type of motor and battery should I use and what remote. Thanks- Rory

I don't think I would recommend it for a first plane but if it flies anything like the original then maybe for a second or third one. Might try the FT-Flyer for a beginner.
For the remote the Spektrum's are the most popular and that is what I like but you might want to check with a local club and ask what they use. Nice to get some hands on before you spend the money.

They usually release the Build Video and plans on Wednesdays after the Project Video, so I'd suspect it to be posted tomorrow.

Did you guys try putting a KFM2 airfoil on it? I wonder if that would help generating lift which would improve it for FPV flying.
Another thought, if you angled down the shoulders of the wings just a little bit it would add some camber to the wing surface, also helping generate just a little bit more lift. The real F22 has this which makes it more of a lifting body design. Just a thought.

What an awesome design. Can't wait to build it. When will the plans be available? I might even try a EDF with this one. Bought the Spitfire after building from plans so that I can paint it up proper.
FT-22 looks like it's going to be another I can't pass up. Great job guys!

Just bought some Black $Tree foam board for this build. Finishing up an RCPowers F-35V2 build at the moment... Not sure if I want to start this one or the Old Fogey. Which ever one, it will be my 6th build in 2 weeks. I just started this hobby and am hooked. Who ever thought my favorite toy would be a hot glue gun!

Lose the black foamboard ,it's harder and less rewarding to work with. I am trying to complete a project with hobbylobby colored (red) foamboard but am having unidentifiable problems getting it to fly properly. Maybe the extra weight ,causing fuse flexing, push rod flexing. but will keep trying till it dies!

Good to know. I will give it a go tho since I do have the two black sheets - see what happens.

Good catch sailorJohn, I agree. Black peels faster for whatever reason... course if you peel then build, Black is the one ta get...

Have you guys ever thought of selling full kits with electronics? I found it a little confusing and more expensive buying all the electronics from different sites and have three separate shipping charges.

RCairforce on January 19, 2014
The Flitetest Power packs from Lazertoyz.com include all the electronics you need except for a radio system.

Finn on January 20, 2014
the only thing that will happen in this respect is that flite test, will have to include their shipping cost, from electronics, in to the bill you will receive from the total package, with speed build kit and electronics.
In your model, you will get rid of the shipping cost and flite test sit with them instead of you.
That will not be fair.

I think the swappable power pod idea is awesome. I plan on making a swappable pusher chassis for this plane and then make mods to this design of other fighter jets.

What a great way to kick off 2014, with a great plane. I did build one of the original ones with limited success. So I can now bin the remains of that and build this version. Great job guys and by the look of the stack of planes behind Josh Scott in the first photo under the video, there's lots of good things to come this year…….

F-22 Raptor Speed build kit ordered 01/15/14

Can you recommend a place to purchase all the electronic parts completion pieces from 1 place rather than 2 or 3 different vendors. I want to complete this this year and avoid several shipping charges. Is there a foamie web site that would have a comparable completion kit ?

I called the customer service number and guess who answered the phone ??? Josh Bixler himself. He was very helpful and directed me to lazertoyz.com and they have several power combo's to choose from and if I remember right they have power combo's for nearly everything Flite Test sells.. And at a reasonable price, including the battery...

Thank-you Josh Bixler !!!!!

My son and I have built several Flitetest kits and this is my favorite. We found it worked better with a larger motor (more power is always better!). With two people, landing is simply having the pilot(my son) aim for me and I catch it like a football.

Then we made the mistake of trying to paint it (before watching the painting videos) and the whole thing warped so I have another laser-cut kit on order.
