Introducing the FT Spear, the newest member of the FT plane family!

The FT Spear was designed to be able to carry all your gear when you fly, including FPV gear, two batteries, and even a vector system.

This wing is a mashup of the blunt nose Versa Wing and the FT arrow. It includes a large compartment reinforced with a center spar and ample room for all your electronics.

The Spear is made from four sheets of foam board and common materials, and it can be built in less than three hours.

Let us know what you think of the new FT Spear,  and special thanks to community member Rüdiger for coming up with the name!”

Is there any way you could release the both the laser cutting plans, and the scratch build plans? The new Scratch build plans are awesome! But they make CAMing planes for a CNC or laser cutter a whole lot harder!

I've been excited to see this design released and like cartman05, I'm eager to use it as my new platform to explore assisted flight using my naze 32 and GPS. This thing looks like fun!

I only wish the guys had not switched gears on us and used the much less common Graupner flight controller. :(. Frankly I'd love to see a few episodes highlighting this new design but dive deeper into using a naze 32 with fixed wing flight. With the general lack of info out there regarding Naze 32 and fixed wings, I'm sure a lot of us around here would find it an interesting and useful topic!

Looking forward to the build plans and video..I am also looking for something to try assisted flight but going to use APM with GPS for testing a long range setup. What kind of flight times is the spear getting?

Epic intro! I LOVE Chipotle, but it's at least a 35 mile drive into HELL to get one :-( Might I suggest a rapid long-range burrito deployment system?

I like wings, and this one looks like the best one yet. The design and work you guys put into this is top-notch! I would also like to see what can be done using a naze 32. I know the flying wing software has really improved since I first started working with it, maybe by now it's easy and reliable enough for most folks to incorporate into their build. I'm hopeful the quadcraze will settle down a bit and alow for development in other areas like wings.

Thanks for a great video, but now I'm starving... and it's not even 7a.m. If I order now, think I can get delivery by lunchtime? C'mon, Burrito Bomber!!

do you guys recon that I can fly this thing with a 935kv motor and 10x45 (or 9x45)props I use on my quadcopter? The motor produces about 850gramms of thrust

How does this compare with the blunt nosed versa? What are the advantages of the Spear? I can see with the nose that sticks out that getting the right CG would be easier.

How similar are the Versa Wings? I have a set of wings already made and curious I can use them with this new center section. Thanks.

What about using the KK2 board with OpenAero software? Granted this may not be the top of the line stabilization platform for a fixed wing but does it have merit? I would love to hear if anyone has had experience with this option as well as pointers.

Had a lot of issues using a Gopro, 2200 Turnigy battery, and a Runcam Owl. Was way to nose heavy even at the balance point set at 3.5 inches. Set the elevons up a few degrees as Josh suggested, but maybe I missed something in my build kit I bought. Anyone else have an issue?

MAN! for the life of me I cannot get the plane not to take a nose dive on launch, placed the battery as far back as possible in the front compartment. So yes I have the same issue. My CG is supposedly good too. I using a 9x4.5R prop on pusher config... any thoughts?

I see in the pictures Josh and the guys were using a 1800 battery, not the 2200 they recommend. Maybe this is the difference in the balance? I ended up smashing mine up and was going to rebuild it with the internal stiffner farther back. Or replacing with a carbon arrow shaft so I could get the battery back far enough. I would have been fine if I was only running a fpv cam and not a gopro at the same time. But the nose heavy tendency lead to its demise. I found myself adding more up aileron every flight till the point it was flying thru the air at an angle plowing through the air. Handled terrible. At one point it stalled and nose dived head first splitting into 3 pieces packing mug into my gorpo. I guess maybe I will build another like I mentioned. I needed another 1 &1/2" maximum back with the battery. only by replacing the boxed reinforcement with a spar will this work. Let me know if you figure anything out. We can't be the only two willing to speak up and mention the bed balance issues.
