How to cover foam airplane with standard covering

I have heard that people are using standard balsa covering film to cover foamies and I had to try it.

And it really is very good solution. Gives the model some stiffness and if you use different colours, you don't have to paint it.

I don't have modellers covering iron, but use standard iron that every house has. Just be sure to set it to synthetic, which is approximate temperature good for covering depron and balsa parts.

But I suggest you to test first on some scrap piece of foam. Temperature too high will melt depron and foam and shrink covering film too much.

Usually I cover only control surfaces with covering film, and sometimes whole plane.

I just tried a similar idea on WR-DFTB. I had trouble getting the covering to stick well. However, if I peeled the paper, the covering stuck quite well. I will try a light sanding on the brown paper and see what happens. Maybe I just need to break the waxy surface up a little.

Yes if it is waxed paper, remove it, this is plain depron board and it sticks well. I also tried with ordinary plain paper and it worked fine too.

Great idea. I have several depron sheets and will be building some planes soon. I never knew that it could be covered with standard covering film. Thanks for the great tip.

I was thinking if that will be possible an then tested on some scrap pieces of foam. Was very happy with the result, and now, I use it on almost all of my foamies, as you can see in this article, some of them are fully covered.
