Iphone on a plane...Works really well!

You may think I'm crazy to put an iphone on a plane but in fact I have some thought to this certain death of an iphone in the event of a crash.

The iphone when mounted vertically and facing the wing gives a really good view and is incredibly streamlined.

The phone is so light that it barley effects the flight performance.

So the moral...it gives you great video without a bulky camera.

P.S This was filmed before gaining my recently acquired GoPro Hero 3 Black.

If you don't really need your Iphone anymore.
Then this is a fantastic way to destroy or Loose it.

Any modern phone that also includes the Iphone... can not withstand moist, and carrying it in a pocket, your sweat can actually ruin it.
Moist is the main "killer" of mobile phones, i 90% of all dead phones, this is the reason.

So mounting it at aplane, is a great way to destroy a unwanted phone.

So, yes. It's at your own risk.

I have a old 3gs, I got a case that just barely over laps the screen so the screen never takes the full hit. I have drop it and got caught in the rain with it. No issues (Thankfully). Do I think it would survive a fall from a plan?
I am with you in saying no. Maybe with a good case like Griffian but, that would throw out the reason for using it all together and you might as well have strap a go pro to it in the first place. But, hey got a old smart phone you don't like anymore throw it on and get some vid of what happens. :)

Having the phone on the plane could be handy in finding it by using a lost phone type app. Then when you get closer you could just dial the phone. Just make sure to have it off silent lol.

I was thinking... maybe you could mount the phone facing forward, do a mobile facetime or skype call to another something like an I pad (if it has Wi-Fi) and voila, you have in flight FPV.

The lag is too high to do actual FPV this way. But it is a cool way to have a live video feed from your plane. I have done it and it works well in that regard. The video is just always a few seconds behind your actual flight.

Unfortunately the limitations of the iPhone also come out with how it does vertical video. Great idea for those old smartphones though!
