The Hawker Typhoon MK IB swappable:

I've recently flown my version of the Hawker Typhoon swappable, and It's been a real chalange to get it to this point. It was a snub nosed fighter so Balance was a chalange from the start! I set out to build two versions and it apears the second will be the one that is successful. I flew the first one yesterday but had to add almost 2 oz of ballast to the nose. It did fly quite well though, but Heavy! This one's gonna require flaps! Tumbled on landing because I couldn't get the speed down. I don't have video equipment yet, but on it's way. so here are some pics from the airfield.

I've painted the second version and added a set of decals that I created in Photoshop. hope you like these

BBQ scures sure come in handy!

A new canopy, but both look good! I moved the Rudder and Elevator servos forward to compensate for Balance issues.

And mounted the motor a little higher to line up the spinner with the upper cowl. I also added a plate and sides to the supercharger bilge to add to the looks.

I recomend a 1200 Kv motor or higher. I used my Turnigy D2836/11 750 Kv for the test flight to keep it slow , but will bump it up now. Now on to my next project: The H.A.V.O.C. Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed the pics, and happy flying!

Nice build! At 22 ozs you'll hardly notice the extra 2 ozs ballast at the front.... but if you did want to shed a little more weight (or carry more battery instead + 500-600mah?) - push those servos even further forward. They're what? about 6-7 inches back from the balance point (CG) 2 x 9 grams is about 0.63 of an ounce. Doing the moments sum --- 0.63 of an ounce x 7 inches = 4.41 You stuck 2 ozs of ballast maybe 2 inches forward from the balance point? Doing the same moments sum on those figures --- 2 x 2 = 4 which produces almost the same effect! That means the 2ozs of ballast is just balancing the effect of those servos! Bring them even further forward to the balance point and you can say goodbye to that ballast. Still, at 22ozs its a lightweight compared to some of my builds :) so you probably won't bother this time around. Worth knowing for future short-nose builds though. When do we get to see the flight video?

Well thank you! And you are absolutely right! I actually wrote this article about three weeks ago, and it just got published today. I've moved the Servos forward to just aft of the TE. due to space limitations and servo access. So I split the difference and went with a 2200 mAh. Balances just about right, and you're right about the weight also. I'm a lightweight myself being less than experienced with flying. That's why I created the excelsior first. I've had very little flight time, and this single digit weather we're having here has kept me in the design and building stage. That's not a bad thing though! I've expanded on the Typhoon already, and have created the Tempest, and the Tornado from the original design. Had already planned that, but not this quick. Anyway thanks again, and happy flying! Hi Pheonix, you've got the cold weather and we've got the wind! Forecast to stay above 18 mph for the next two weeks here in Scotland :( ...well above my flying ability. You've got some great builds though, and more coming - can't wait to see them fly. Without a buddy willing to film, I went for a little camera set into a pair of sunglasses through Ebay. They manage well over an hour of filming. All I have to do is remember to 'head-track'. One problem - I can't seem to stop leaning back during take-off and landings (something to do with physically willing the planes to fly) so I miss some of those shots. Nobody's perfect. Really? How much did they cost. I have the same problem. Can't get a buddy that has the time to go out with me to film. I've got a little Emerson action cam I got off Amazon, but still have to figure out how to mount it to something to strap it to my head so that it captures what I'm looking at. Been testing it lately, and It's a bit like zeroing my weapon in the Army. 25 meters at a time. LOL

Hi Phoenix, the product I bought can be searched on Ebay as "Sun Glasses Mini DV" - they came from china and just now the cheapest I can see are £8.74 ($14.29) including postage from china. There's also some available through bidding, again with free postage - you might get lucky and pay a lot less. They need a micro SD card. I bought an 8GB card but the recording battery runs out before it gets half full - it would probably be fine with 4GB if you remember to remove the clips each time you return to base. It manages about 2 hours filming on a full charge, but for some reason starts a new file every 25-30 mins - though it doesn't seem to miss anything in the change from one file to the next. Cover the mic. hole with foam to reduce wind noise. All my Flite Test videos are filmed with it (alibopo) so you can judge the quality. Not great but much better than nothing. I tried a 'hat-cam' setup as well with poor results. The only way to do it reliably is have a target stick with some sort of cross-hair projecting from the hat. A lot easier with the specs! Cheers.

Hey there Alibopo. I took your advice and found a pair in HD version for only $16.99 / W free shipping. Comes with carrying case DVD and USB Charging cable but no SD card.which I already have an 8 G mini card. Will be here by Jan. 3rd. Thank you so much for the advice! Merry Christmas

That's great Roger. I'm going to keep track of your transaction as I am currently revisiting the Perfect storm. After a long recovery from a heart transplant I'm finally getting back into my hobby. I have several projects I'm working on at the same time right now, and this is one of them. Hopefully in a month or two I can have it ready, and I'd like to offer it to you for free when it's finished. I've made some changes to the nose to make it look more accurate, and the plans include all you need to build one of the three version, or all three if you like simply by switching out the wings, and, or canopy section.
