Scratch Built FT Flyer - Maiden Flight

by scotthearn | January 27, 2013 | (11) Posted in Just Fun

This is my second shot at a scratch build. (I made a nutball 1st). What fun! So cool to see somehting flying around and thinking, "I made that!" Thanks to Josh, Josh, Chad and David for all the inspiration and ideas and help. Made the wings out of black foam board from my local Dollar Store.

It's a light plane on a breezy day so be ready for a pretty wild ride...

I know exactly what you're talking about, the Old Fogey was the first scratchbuild I flew and no pre-built plane can give you that satisfaction. That feeling comes back each time a new plane lifts away from me. I might have never thought about building a plane had it not been for Flight Test, and now I don't want to fly anything else.

I agree! Was at my hobby shop this evening and instead of looking at the sweet deals they had on pre-builts I was looking at parts! Yes, if it hadn't been for Flitetest I never would have thought I could have done it either. Thanks for watching my video and commenting!

I have just about finished my old fogey and it is a scratch build, 1st build in 42yrs., and it was a learning experience all over again. I like to be able to get in the air fast with a quick build, but to cut costs even more for just getting back into the hobby I did the scratch build. I made a few mistakes and learned a lot for the next build.

My first scratch-built was a nutball. Lots of fun to make and fly. I was amazed at how well it handled. Make sure to post a video of yours when you get it finished.

The FT Flyer is the most fun to fly! I like to hold back the elevator all the way and manage the throttle. When you do this, it'll fly at a high angle of attack at about 3mph.
Really enjoyed the camera view. Thanks for sharing!
