After my last video, I had quite a few people asking what flight times I got using Sunnysky 1400kv motors on my Tricopter so I did a little test.

Motor: http://www.buddyrc.com/sunnysky-x2212-9-1400kv-ii.html

I use 9xx4.7 props

I had a 2200 3s 35c battery running this and a GoPro Hero 3 on it, I got 10 minutes before the crash and would estimate adding another 3-5 minutes onto that, so the flight times are pretty long.

MY MAIN GOAL IS TO GET SOME OPINIONS ON:

Should I get an openlrs or frsky module to replace my spektrum dx7s, I'm not looking for range, just reliability. I have a futaba 8UAF that I scooped up and would use that to put the module fyi

Buddyrc.com is the new epbuddy.com. Its really reliable, I get my parts in 3 days for really cheap shipping since they are in the US, like $4 cheap.

This may be a dumb question, but what is receiver brownout? I read up a little on the subject and isn't it when the voltage gets too low on the the receiver and it cuts out (In this situation I know about becs, ubecs or other battery packs)? Or is it also when something disturbs/overpowers the link between the tx and rx? Thanks in advance!

Yep, it is when a receiver drops below its minimum voltage it can run off of (I think this receiver is 3.2 volts) Thanks btw.

Also thank you for the run time info. I was planning on purchasing some 3000mah for some builds with these motors. Very nice copter as I said before!

I think your left motor arced out at the connector.

Thanks for the comment and pardon my noob but could you expain that a bit?

if two connectors have exposed metal (between heatshrink and bullet connector) and are TOUCHING OR CLOSE to each to other, the electricity can arc between the two wires, essentially disabling that motor

Oh ok, thanks. I know they cant touch but i could see them getting very close. Looks like i got some testing ahead.

Just put some tape or heat shrink over each separate connection.

Are you using a separate bec for the tail servo? I noticed that you have afro esc's. They supply 5V but only 0.5A. Maybe the servo is drawing to much current causing a brown out?

Yes I am using afro esc's and do not have a separate bec.

Now that you say that, that seems to have a high probability of causing it because most buillt in bec's are like 3-5 amp, not .5 amp. But why would it take 10 minutes to finally happen?

I checked on hobby king and the afro esc's do have only a 0.5amp linear BEC. So yea I would use either another UBEC, and disable the esc's ubec (cut either red or black). Also make sure that only one of your esc's BECs were functional other wise they could interfere and possibly shutdown an esc

Thanks for the great info, I just ordered a 5v 5amp ubec. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it goes.

Thumbs up for FrSky as a good choice on 2.4 - have been FPV:ing past 1.5km with stock omni txantenna without problems. The D4R-II rx is neat: really light, full range with dual antennas, can handle more than 4 channels if your flight controller supports combined ppm.

I ordered an OpenLRS set from HK the other day to get an idea of how 433 performs when pushing for more range than that or flying behind heavy vegetation. Have no experience with OpenLRS so far other than watching rchacker.com and the flitetest episode with IBCrazy and reading HK's disclaimer ("requires computer programming skills" etc), but I suspect FrSky will remain my default choice (rock solid so far, easy to use). Could probably get even more range out of it with a patch antenna.
