FT Gremlin Micro Quad

by FliteTest | April 24, 2017 | (10) Posted in News

After months of hard work, sweat and tears (from laughter), the FT Gremlin micro quad has finally arrived. Part of the Flite Test DNA is our passion for DIY plane projects and with the new FT Gremlin, you are now able to create your very own DIY micro quad!

Some of the things we love about the FT Gremlin:

  • You don’t have to use carbon fibers—you can use wood or plastic as well
  • It can be flown in a variety of environments—inside and outside
  • It is the perfect size—sub 250g
  • It’s safer than most quads this size

With this passion project our hope is that we can encourage and enable your creativity, resourcefulness and personality as you design and build your own FT Gremlin. You can let your imagination run wild while not compromising the flight experience, time or performance. Our desire is also to create a space where you can share your Gremlin plans with other members of the FT community so that we all can learn and grow while having a great way to connect with other RC hobbyists.

Check out some of the designs from our FT team:

Josh

Alex

TJ

Stefan

Another big goal of ours with the FT Gremlin is to bring the build plans into schools like we have with several of our FT planes. We’re currently creating lessons surrounding the entire build experience . Our hope is for students to learn problem solving and critical thinking skills while they create their own designs from the ground up—we’re not merely asking them to assemble a quad. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Be sure to check out the forums were a couple of us have been working on designs: http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?33056-Flitetest-DIY-Gremlins

I went with some Racerstar 1103 motors and a PicoBlx FC since I wanted to start building ASAP and not wait for the emax parts. I'd love to adapt my design to use the emax kit but still haven't seen verified sizes on the motor and their mounting pattern :( Seen a couple conflicting reports on the mounting pattern so looking forward to seeing the FT designs to figure out which is accurate.

My own design is 3D printed and up on thingiverse here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2240071 I've crashed it hard enough to bend a motor shaft but didn't break the frame yet. Ok, I did break two of the FC mounts but didn't even realize it until I took it apart to move the parts to a new variation of the frame :)

https://www.emaxmodel.com/emax-micro-brushless-power-system-combo-1.html

If you go there and scroll down u can see all the dimensions and diagrams for the motors and other components :) straight from Emax. Also if you want just the emax powerpack u can buy it there but Id support FT of course :) hope this helps

Yeah, I've leaned not to trust emax. From "Simon Series" esc's running blheli and "blheli series" esc's with their own modified version of blheli that isn't compatible with blheli suite. To my NHP280 which listed frequencies for the VTX that were dropped but still listed in the manual...they aren't exactly a font of reliable information even about their own products :( So I'm very disinclined to trust their drawings. I could do a design based on them but need to find someone willing to test if it actually fits.

Eventually I'll probably pick a set up myself, but this is the worst time of year for it since my hobby budget drops to almost zero for the duration of A/C season here in the desert :( I've talked to three different people who have motors in hand and said they'd send me measurements...but none have actually followed through. FT has also repeatedly said in the forum and videos that they'll be posting details and resources to help designers...so...fingers crossed they follow through on that.

When will the Alex and Stefan frames come out. I like Alex's frame the best, but don't know if I should wait for it to come out before I order one?

I modeled my own frame after the QAV210, and call is the QAV-M (Mirco) 110. Check it out on thingiverse.

I made the model work with both the EMAX power pack micro system motors or the a standard 9mm 1104 motor mount

Hi all.... we are still waiting for the free plans for some of your gremlins. I would willingly buy a frame but the postage from the US to the UK is just too much..

Got my TJ special and its a blast. Totally recommend it.
Just wondering what options people have come up with to monitor lipo voltage.
I am not keen on hanging a lipo alarm off it unless absolutely no other option.
are people just keeping a stopwatch or is there a tiny lva out there i haven't found.
Keep flying peeps.
