Autogyro with pre-rotator

by Axbri | September 14, 2014 | (9) Posted in Just Fun

I just wanted to share my latest video of my homebuilt autogyro. It is almost five years old now, and I do not fly it very often. Since all old videos of it are old and bad quality, i desided to make a new one. The autogyro itself is my own design and the result of some testing. What makes this design uniqe is that it is equiped with an electric prerotator to spin up tor main rotor before takof.

Plans and more detailed info are avalible on my website: http://axelsdiy.brinkeby.se/?page_id=354

The rotor is started with a brushed Speed 280 motor using a friction drive system.

The Speed 280 motor is controlled using a solid state power switch (seen in image above) conected to a PIC microprocessor (seen in image below). It listens to the signals gonging to the servos and is it senses that the rotor is tilted fully backward and is centerd, the pre-rotraor motor is started.

Large standerd servos are used to tilt the rotor farvard and backward and left and right. The autogyro also has a rudder but no elevator

The rotorhead is also my design, based on some resurch on RCgroups.

Very neat - An autogyro is on my to do list - Why don't you fly it much?

I think building and testing is the most interesting part in this case. You can learn a lot of things from an autogyro from scratch. But when it works, it is not the most interesting thing to fly. Mine is also a little underpowered, I fly at almost full throttle the entire video.

Wouldn't a micro-switch work to start the pre rotator?

yes, that would maybe work. But I can easily adjust the threshold for when the motor starts in the firmware. I can also adjust the power to the motor using PWM. If to much power goes to the motor, my friction drive system will slip and not work properly.

I would love to see more on this one. Maybe plans and a build video?

Plans are available as a PDF download on my website: http://axelsdiy.brinkeby.se/?page_id=354

I built this years ago, and I do not think I will build another one, sorry no build video.

That's absolutely awesome! I haven't tried a pusher-gyro yet, definitely want that at some point (this summer?).

Also, I'd like to add a shameless plug to anyone who's interested in another scratch built autogyro model.
