Coke Bottle RC Plane

The first image is just a plan I drew to see how every thing would look. Although I haven't built the 3D model as a biplane.

The main wing has remained the same in both the plan and prototype, whereas the rudder and elevator have changed due to size and strength difficulties.

The 3D model isn't accurate in symetry! I put an 850 mah battery to find the cg. It's a little over half way of the wing just about 1cm infront of the tape. As you can see the elevator is rectangle for more surface area and goes past the bottle cap. Whereas the rudder has a slight angle at the front and is rounded at the back. Do you think the plane will be able to fly with the wing I have desgned for it? I was thinking about making the CB - 1 a biplane but decided not to because of weight and space restraints.

The final plane will be built out of foam board.

Please let me know if there's anything else I could do to further improve the design of this plane.

Next section is an update.

The first image you will see is the cutting guidelines. I used the seam of the bottle as a reference line, it also made cutting easier. Why? the seam is a little thicker so it's harder to cut through the blade kind of just bounces off it.

The current model is 3 channel. Although I'm not exactly sure if the controll surfaces are big enough or are too big. Unlike the CB - 1 the CB - 2 has a flap connected above the wing. Will this help with aerodynamics? The wing is held down by two elstic bands that fasten down on a tooth-pick, I've done the same fastening method for the "canopy." During construction I thought it best to attach the servo for the elevator to the elevator, as for the rudder servo it stayed on the fuselage. Let me know if I should add ailerons.

Due to space restraints and the CG I decided to carve a pocket into the center of the wing to house the battery. As you can see the wing can be removed with very little effort to replace or recharge the battery and to access the electronics.

The CG is about 30% back from the front of the wing. ( I think )

I've made a small compartment to secure the receiver and ESC. In this image you can see how I've fastened down the canopy and wing. ( The ESC is not in the compartment )

Thanks For Reading!

So, if you found this article interesting tell me!

Suggest any improvements and if i should update the article with plans. You too can recycle a Coke bottle...

Should I upload the maiden flight?

Kind of reminds me of a Gee Bee racer. It certainly looks like it will work. I would love to see the results.

Great Idea! The balance looks right. if the aileron is not moving enough you might have finer aileron control with the servo up over the CG so the push rod travel is more in line to servo arm travel instead of perpendicular. I love recycling projects.

ALWAYS a maiden if you can do it, it shows the unbelievers that it really "can" work. :D.
