FPV out of range crash!

by Jackson | May 7, 2013 | (7) Posted in Just Fun

Hi, I just wanted to share with you guys my experience of losing all the signal of the RC link and also almost losing my plane to the sea.

I know it was stupid of me to fly FPV with Spektrum transmitter and to go so far away. But I was only a beginner when this happened and had already bought some long range gear but couldn't wait for it to arrive, so I took the risk :/    I lost the signal only about 500-600 meters away.

The plane is a Twinstar II and it was easy to repair after the crash.

The location is Iceland, Reykjavík.

How far could I get with a satellite connected to the receiver with spectrum?

I had an AR6210 receiver with a satellite receiver connected but lost signal at only about 600 meters. But I had before gone about 750 meters away.

Awesome picture, very lucky that didn't end up in the drink.

Your music selection is perfect for this video. Glad you were able to recover the plane.

I started flying fpv with my DX8 and AR8000 with satellite. I had much success within a mile, pushing 4000-5000 feet out and up to 2000 feet agl. Just know your gear.

I'm running on 1.3GHz with low pass filter for FPV, and Spektrum for RC control. I have talked to multiple people about it, and they say with that setup its not safe to go pass 500m. I have done multiple flights within 500m and have had no problems, but I did have a minor uncontrolled landing my last flight. I think it was caused by to many trees in between myself and my plane. :)

It really bothers me that people say that regardless of what you do with a Spektrum transmitter, you will have horrible range. They never even mention the idea of simply changing out the receiver and using a module from a different brand.

Are you using DSM2 or DSMX?

I am also a beginner at FPV and on one of my first few flights, I managed to fly out of range but got lucky. Since then, I made sure that I would fly strictly with in the range that I could still see my plane with my eyes and I hope to some day break the line of sight barrier when I have the equipment. I plan on using a Frsky module connected to a 2 watt wifi booster on my Spektrum DX6I. I also plan on using an OSD on the same setup so that I can tell the signal strength.
