MY 1/3 scale piper L/4

by giant gas planes | December 6, 2013 | (13) Posted in Projects

This is my 1/3 scale piper l-4. I originally bought the plans off of ebay for about $20 vs. buying a 1/3 scale kit for $2,000. This is my first ever rc scratchbuild I have ever done. I started the project in December 15, 2012 at the age twelve and have built only using my spare time.

The plane has welded steel tubing functional gear and will also have a 2 cylinder 53cc gas engine.

Overall whe nfinished it will weigh 26lb have a 15ft wing span with flaps flaperons and 6 inch inflatable bush tires.

Oh wow,
I started my first scratchbipuild at twelve, also a pipercub. Similarities end there.
You have talent sir. Period. Do you have any idea of a completion date? Beautiful job, I know 50 year olds who could not do that if they tried.
Great job.

I have a few questions about the plans you purchased for this plane. But 1st great job on your progress!! 1st question, Which plans did you buy off ebay, was it the ones from Mrhobby?? If so did you like the plans and was there little guess work?? The reason I'm asking is because I have been thinking about purchasing the 1/2 scale cub plans from him, but was never real sure until I saw your plane! So you basically inspired me to go ahead and commit to it! But I'd just like to know your thoughts on the quality and amount of direction of the plans. Thank you!

I did get the plans from mrhobby the quality was pretty good, but when I got the plans he sent me the wrong instructions, they were for a 1/4 scale, but after looking at the plans I slowly figured out step by step what to do. I have had to redesign the cabin structure and the stabilizer attach points. The cabin was way under built and on the plans the tail feathers were glued instead of removable. After fixing those two problems it was easy.

I actually bought some hobby glass from my local hobby store and did the windows myself. I'll have to upload some more pictures on my plane with all of the sheet metal pieces and the windows on it.

Yes the plans tell you what size you need, but the airplane is mostly built out of spruce and plywood.

Okay Thanks. I take it you can get the spruce and plywood at a lowes or something? I've only ever built balsa kits. Sorry so many question!

Very beautiful plane, keep us updated. I always have a special place in my heart for the cubs as I used to work for Piper. I started after the cub was retired in 1996? from the factory, but it is still a very important part of the company. That's an impressive piece of art ya got there. I actually have about three retired, smaller foam scratch build cubs hanging around my house. Maybe one day I will have the opportunity to build something of this size and quality.
