RC Plane Scratch Build Using KFM Airfoils

This is my first ever scratch build RC Plane. I have used combination of  regular white foam or packaging foam, foamboard and coroplast for this build.

I always wanted to design and scratch build my own RC plane so I have not followed any plans for this build. I just drew the fuselage shape as I thought would work.

For the fuselage 1 inch thick white foam is used. After drawing the fuselage outlines I cut the shape from the foam.

I realized that the fuselage wasn't stiff enough so I decided to attach Fiber Glass rods to it. I didn't carve any channel for that. I just used clear packing tape or cellotape to attach it. It worked out very well and fuselage is very stiff and strong now.

Then I used foam board to make Horizontal Stabilizer, vertical fins and elevator.

Next I made a slot for the lipo battery to fit in.  Below the slot , 2 cm wide slit for the battery strap to pass. It weakened the area around it, so i used popsicle stick on both side to strengthen it.

Making KFM Wing -

Next I used 1 cm thick white packaging foam for the wing. I cut one rectangle of 38 inch long and 8 inch width rectangle for base plate of KFM wing.

Then I cut 38 inch long and 4 inch width rectangle for KFM Step or upper plate of KFM wing. Then I hot glued these rectangle pieces as shown. To create the leading edge, I used sandpaper. The leading edge is very smooth after that. The KFM step is exactly at 50 % of the Wing Chord.

Now comes the fun part- Painting the wing. I used my own design on the bottom part of the wing and painted with Poster Color which are commonly available at the sationery store.

After painting the wing I covered fuselage and wing completely with packing tape or cello tape. It improved the structural strength to a great extent. My plane crashed two times nose first and nothing happened to it. It was flying again with no repair needed. Great!

For the ailerons I used coroplast or plastic corrugated sheet. Two 9 gram servos were fixed in the wing where I cut slots for them. These two servos connected to a " Y splitter cable " and other end of the wire is connected to receiver. This means that one aileron goes up and the other goes down.

Finally for wing mounting I used wooden dowels and for reinforcement, hard cardboard pieces with holes were glued on the fuselage.

My plane is now ready. All up weight is 430 grams with 1000 mah 3 Cell and around 540 grams using 2200 mah 3 cell.

I enjoyed my first scratch build. Let me know your suggestions and queries.

Hope it inspires and give you some ideas to build your own RC plane.

Happy Flying.
