Rotary drive system for aerilons or flaps

This is not my invention but something I came across on the Tube.

I can't do better then offer the YOUTUBE video that shows it working and some drawings I have made to show how it works.

The idea, like many good ideas is very simple. It creates an aerilon or flap actuator that doesn't use push rods.

The Stiff wire is bent at 45 Deg at the end and encased with a close fitting plastic lid top and bottom. As the rod is rotated the movement of the bent end is transmitted to the aerilon. This allows the aerilon servo to be embedded in the wing and the mechanism totally hidden enhancing scale reality.

Great showing here for those who may not have seen this before. This technique is used a lot in competitive gliders. The idea is that because the components are internal there is less drag. Other scale builders like them because it gives a better scale presence.

If you mount servo and wire at 45 degree angel to the hingeline, you can glue the bend part into the rudder, eleminating all play exept that of the servo itself. Saves time too.

It looks great. What type servo would you use? Wouldn't it have to be a good and strong one? Really would like to know that kind of stuff. Thanks

As yet I havn't built this but in principle you should be able to use your normal servo. The lining of the box needs to be smooth to reduce friction though.

Now was thinking how would you adjust it? If you do use it I hope that you tell use how it worked out. Do you think it would work on a foam board plane?

There isn't any reason to think it won't work on foam. The throw is set by the angle of the bend in the rod and how far the servo rotates.
