Waterproof Foam - 2016 Survey

by FliteTest | December 28, 2015 | (14) Posted in News

We want to be the best Flite Test we can be! The reason we are even here is because of you. Moving foward we want to continue to give you the content and products you want. As much fun as we have here making huge builds and crazy challenges, if nobody wants to see that we aren't doing our jobs. It helps us out immensely when we recieve input directly from the community. All we ask is for a few minutes of your time to let us know what makes you excited to check out Flite Test every week.

TAKE THE SURVEY HERE!

The surveys have been a huge success in the past and brought a lot of important updates to the way we design planes, shoot build videos, plan content, etc. Another great way to see what's going on behind the scenes is to sign up for our newsletter. This way you can stay up to date on future releases like this waterproof foamboard we've been working with! The idea is to have a material that cuts and bends just like the foam we are all used to but without the fear of morning dew, rain, or snow! It's just now in its infant stage be we were so exited that we had to at least tease it for you.

We hope you take the time to make your voice heard. It helps us out more than you can imagine and keeps us on the right track. Thank you so much for being a part of the Flite Test Family!

love the idea of water proof foam board, but how does it work with taking paint?

The-One-Who-Never-Crashes on December 29, 2015
I think that it'll take paint as is.

I have seen things that bead water like that (example: water proof plywood and OSB) do the same thing to paint. that is why I asked.

I love that water resistant foam board. Hope it is not much more than the white. Has it been tested with different glues or only hot glue? Anyway I'm excited to see it and believe it will be a big boost to the foam builds.

Accolades!! Enjoyed seeing both Josh(s) doing a presentation together - in that peculiar down-home, upbeat, charming style, their mutual chemistry just seems designed to engender. Well done gentlemen!!

Did the survey.

Are you going to offer Speed Build Kits with the new waterproof foam?

Survey done.
I would like to be able to purchase Flite Test full size plans from the store. I have not been able to find a local company to print plans. I would have to pay for printing anyway, I would rather get them here. Just something to think about.

Excellent idea. I live in a small town, have to go to the BIG town, 40 miles and pay and wait. I've tried sending PDF files, but expensive, and they don't get the scale right. Taping sucks. I'm sure that full size would be rolled up and put in a tube and shipping would be a challenge. I would be interested.

For me at least, taping together the sheets of paper is at least half the build. It would be great to get printed full size plans.

I just got some full sized plans in the mail for a wood kit. They were rolled and in a shipping Triangle box made for blue prints. This would be the best way to ship plans.

I am in the same boat would be great to offer full size plans, makes it a little easier then taping everything together. Folding and a brown envelope would also work a few fold marks to me not a big deal.

An old trick for flattening folded plans, is to iron them. (carefully)

I took the survey but forgot to mention one important thing. Along with the comments above, I would like to see templates for each model.
Sometimes printing the right size is more of a challenge than you could imagine. I would buy a template set and the waterproof foam for building a "scratch" kit from you if they were available at a reasonable cost.
Printing and getting a good print at the right size is the biggest problem for me. Templates made from poster board might work?

i second that 100%

Not trying to be a jerk here, but it seems to me the cost for a set of templates would probably be comparable to the cost of a kit.
Why not just purchase the kit? The pieces to the kit could be used for making your own templates.
I do this with any balsa kit I get. Then if I damage the plane, I have templates to make new parts from.

Great year for FT. I would like to see a couple of things though.

1. I want to see you try to catch a fish with a quadcopter
2. I want to see a scratch built quadcopter that has retracting arms like the Inspire
3. I want to see an RC car fly

Happy New Year

As soon as the waterproof foam board is available I'll be building lots of new planes. I love the FT Flier but the wings eventually get all warpy after just exposure to wet grass, even with the min wax treatment. A new waterproof Bushwhacker with floats would be a must. Truthfully, I wouldn't use the old redi-board again if I had access to the waterproof board. I only hope FT and DT will carry it soon. Perhaps, my local hobby shop will carry it if DT doesn't.

I would even spring for a laser-cut kit to get the waterproof board. Actually, a laser-cut kit for a waterproof Bushwhacker float plane would be an instant purchase for me.

Im new to this whole flight build thing.. but god am I excited!! I initially went off the wrong way I guess, with rib designs and Balsa wood. Managed to get a few off the ground.. but the whole things was extremely unstable and my calculations on weight and CG always seemed to get a little off by the time I get done with the plane. So, now I think I will do Depron. I tried a few, before I got introduced to FT. Now I am a hard core fan. You guys just rock!!! About the water proof thing, that will be real interesting for me, coz my biggest concern in this part of my country, is that i do not have a decent place to fly. I am right in front of a huge river, so water landing, and takeoff, should be awesome. Can't wait to see that.

just flew a great planes vfo on the flight simulator. I think this should be the next plane you guys make a kit for. This was a blast to fly, and looks like it would be fairly easy to build.
