3 stage flaps on a Turnigy/Flysky/Eurgle 9x

I'm not sure how many people fly with the stock firmware on the 9x. I'm still yet to re-flash it, as I've been able to figure out most basic programming without too much fuss. However, when I added flaps to my Spitfire, I couldn't figure out how to 1. make them move in the same direction, and 2. put them on the 3 stage switch.

I found some inspiration on the net, but when I used a Y cable the servos moved in opposite directions. So a re-think was needed.

First things first, you need a spare channel. I used channel 5 for landing gear, leaving 6, 7 and 8 free.

Then, turn on your tx and open the AUX-CH setting. Set channel 6 (the empty one) to THRO HOLD. This tells the tx that the 3 way switch is active for throttle hold. Next, set channel 7 to PIT TRIM, and leave channel 8 NULL. With 7 as pitch trim, this servo should go down to full flap, while channel 8 is neutral.

Next, go to PROG.MIX. You first flaps mix should be as follows:

The AUX used for this mix is the first one (next to FLP), not the second. This neutralises the flap with the switch at normal (off).

Select the next mix, and program as follows:

This is the first AUX again. When you put the 3 way switch into the middle, you should get your takeoff flap (just less than half way). In the bottom position, you should get full flap.

Now to program the other side (next mix):

This is using the second AUX, and should program your takeoff flap to the middle position.

Lastly, use another mix as follows for full flap:

Now you should have 3 position flaps, with N (top) with no flaps, 1 (middle) takeoff flaps and 2 (bottom) full flaps.

Happy flapping!

John

Do you know if the 3 position switch can be utilized with flaperons? Currently, I use the Pitch Trim (AUX 2) knob to control the flaps. As such, I can also use the flaperons as spoilerons. It works well enough, but I can never be sure if I have the flaps in the neutral position without looking away from the plane and down at the controller. Not a huge problem with the Super Cub, but still not ideal.

Thanks!

That *should* be possible. I haven't tried doing this myself yet.

This mix pairs channels 6 and 7 and channels 6 and 8. You should be able to substitute channel 1 with either 7 or 8.

One thing that'll need fine tuning is having one mix moving the ailerons in different directions, while another couple of mixes move them in the same direction...

I setup my RC powers F22 with flaperons and airbrakes using the same technique

How do you program the 3 position switch with the FY 30AP that has 3 modes---off---stabilized----3D. Have not been able to get it assigned and working as yet.

I reckon it'd be something analagous to this, however because it's on/off for different functions, rather than servo positions, you may be able to get away with one less pair of mixes...

Thanks! It's nice it's not a video :)

Thanks Andre. There's only one thing worse than the beep of the 9x buttons, and that's hearing them on a video!

I get that feel, bro! I suffer from the DX6i beeping!

a dab of hot glue on the speaker/buzzzer fixes that problem

You can just unsolder that beeper if you want it gone. Side effect is that you also lost the alarm and the beeping for trimming. I flew like that for some time.

Hi from Australia. Good article. I have been trying to do this for ages. One simple question! Does the lead for the right servo go into channel 6 and the lead for the left servo go into channel 7? or do you use a y cable and connect into channel 6 only. Appreciate a hand. Alex

Hi Alex, I left 6 blank and plugged left flap into 7 and right into 8. When I tried a Y cable the servos moved different directions.

G'day Lobstermash. I have set up my TX and RX exactly the way you describe but i can't get it to work. On the RX, i have Ch 6 blank, 7 to left servo and 8 to right servo. I then followed to set the Tx exactly as you show in the diagrams for the AUX- CH and Mix 1 , Mix 2 , Mix 3, Mix 4 using the exact same settings. I then flick the 3 way switch and nothing happens. Have i missed something. Is there a setting in the TX that i have missed or is there a setting somewhere that is over riding this setup?. Your article is very good and i am sure it can be easily resolved. Cheers Alex

It's odd that nothing happens... Did you get one flap to work after you programmed the first two mixes? If not, there must be something overriding the mixes (check through all your pre-programmed mixes).

If there're no other mixes on, make sure that your second two mixes (last two photos, mixes 3 and 4 in my case) have the *second* AUX selected as slave. You should have to press the right arrow twice before it goes back to FLPS.

Let me know if you're still having trouble.

Thanks for article.
in the first part of article you said "I used channel 5 for landing gear, leaving 6, 7 and 8 free."
but in the first picture, there is some connection in 7th and 8th channels?
which cables are plugged to CH 7 and 8 ?

The flaps are plugged in to channel 7 and 8.

My flaps have 1 plug (with Y cable) . which channel I should plug it ? ch7 or ch8?

It doesn't matter. Unless you have a servo reverser on one of the servos, they will travel in different directions (hence the need for the programming them in like I did).

OK, show's over. I've re-flashed with ER9x... Hopefully it won't take me too long to figure this out with the new firmware!

OK, I've put off doing this for too long, but I've figured it out. I'll edit the article tomorrow with the method I used for 3 stage flaps with the ER9x. I'm sure there are easier ways than how I got it to work, but I'll post my method anyway.

You legend Lobster! I spent hours trying to make the flaps work with the 3 pos. switch and then I found this!

I got a little confused as to why it wasn't working, but then I re-read the article and found that I'd used the wrong 'Aux' in the mix settings :D

Cheers!

No worries Al! I really should make the next article about 3 stage flaps with ER9x... It took me almost as long to figure it out again.

Lobstermash, I know this is an older post but I just came across it trying to set this up for the first time. I have followed the instructions perfectly. Does not work. I double checked the aux selections, looked for any other mixes act and checked the throttle hold to inactive. I can't make it work. The one thing I am not sure of is what version of SW I have. I bought the radio in 2012.
pleas help. Thanks, Doug

Hi Doug, it's certainly been a long time since I wrote this up! I'll try and help if I can, but I haven't used the original firmware for a couple of years now.

With the program and receiver set exactly as per the article, what happens when you use the three position switch?
