Flying Toaster

by FliteTest | November 11, 2013 | (37) Posted in Projects

Inspired by the old screensaver from After Dark Chad issued a challenge to Josh and David; Make a toaster fly and toast in flight.

Josh built the airframe

The original flying toaster screensaver

David was was in charge of making the toaster work.

Field testing of the toaster

It works!

Josh and Chad testing a toaster on the Kraken

The first test of the toaster plane didn't go that well. It needed vertical stabilization

The final toaster plane, with the final V-tail that acts as rudder only. The elevons only act as elevators.

Lots of batteries

Success!

Blocks, blenders ,fowl and now a toaster--- kind of anticlimactic. There's a group of combat flyers in Arkansas flying a simple combat plane (HOGWILD) that seems to be spreading into middle Tn. I saw a well used copy of their coreplas flat wings at a swap meet last week made out of qtr in Fanfold and successfully copied it in Adams foamboard from just seeing it. Well worth checking it out if there is no patients involved. I saw a similar design on utube from several yrs back . The important thing is a fuse mounted with a central prop and some protection for the rec and battery. I'm sure you could improve on the design and have fun as a group.

Well, since I didn't get any credit for suggesting the After Dark flying toaster six months ago in the forums, I'll try another suggestion.

How about a flying bird cage ala Warner Brothers Tweety Bird. See my comment on the Flying Toaster in the forums for a picture.

Just cleaned out the second bedroom, noting that I was tossing out several attempts at painting using oil base polyurethane. Maybe creating a vinyl overlay for FT's models would make a good winter project,

Really enjoy hearing the thought process...what worked and what didn't...and what you were thinking about how to solve the problems along the way. Anyone can follow a recipe (and make toast!) but showing what didn't work is as valuable as showing what did. Thanks!

It would be great if you could link the plans for the wing design, minus the toaster. My main question here would be, could you achieve the same level of vertical stability with wing end rudders as opposed to the butterfly stabilators used in this design.

You guys should really sell some of these crazy builds. I know they are not meant to be the most durable, but they are great and several would love to have a little of the Flite Test history too. Maybe they are auctioned off for charity or something. Just my two cents.

This "toaster" plane looks absolutely amazing. And hearing everyone talk about once the kinks were figured out how stable it was... FPV? can we PLEASE have plans for this plane? Just plans are enough, I can build her from there! :D thanks!

First post for N00bieflightguy!

Ok I've watched a TON of your video's, love all these crazy food builds. But I would really love to see a "toast in the dark" video? Like put some flashy colorful l.e.d's on here and make some night time toast! plus the added lower night time temp might throw off the temp and make you modify the design a little.
