Give a Second Chance to your Old Radios (Part 3)

by JACKFIRE | July 2, 2014 | (0) Posted in How To

Hi friends, finally I'm got time to work on the final part of this article, as I said before I'll show you how I used a Hitec Spectra 2.4ghz Module in a Jr X 378 Transmitter

Why Hitec? Why Jr?

As you may know there is many options to get your transmitter in 2,4ghz, FrSky, AnyLink, Corona and many others, the thing about Hitec is that this module has a very solid system that they call AHFSS this system basically scans the frequency before, then uses the empty or clean parts of the frequency, this means you can use FPV systems in 2,4ghz with this system without having any problem or reduce the range. this systems also has telemetry and many cool accesories as the HTS-NAVY or HTS-VOICE and others.

You can get a lot of information on this great videos courtesy of Bruce Simpson on RcModelReviews:

Now about the transmitter I think this are a great radios, has the most important functions that you find in a 300 or 400 bucks transmitter. Now if you dont like this TX the purpose of this article is encourage you to revive that great radio you left just because it is on 72Mhz, in fact if you have a Futaba that uses FP-TP-FM, FP-TK-FM or similar you just have to plug it in and you are ready.

This is how it looks after and before:

Inside the transmitter you have to find the Transmission module, in this case is pretty obvious:

as you can see there is a cable which is Ground Vcc & PPm signal. in my case I replaced the cable to a conventional rc cable to identify it much easier

I use a multimeter to check from the batt connector where goes ground And +Vcc so the third cable is PPM, is a safe way without connecting the battery. In this particular case the wiring is:

Now the module,

1.The module

2. Open up

3.  4. & 5. Trim the case

6. Cover the sides of the piece with tape to fit it in the crystal hole

7. A little piece of adhesive vinil to cover the "72 Mhz" label.

With another scrap piece from the case you can put the new module aligned.

Here is the module installed, also there is the bind button, which is really easy to install.

Finally conect the module and close the case

Warning!!! you have to be very careful in this step, if the connection is wrong, you will blow up the module (happened to me). in the image is the correct way to do it. Brown: Ground(-), Red: Vcc (+), Yellow: PPM signal.

And finally this is the result

I hope you like this article, this was the third time I have done this upgrade besides the the FrSky upgrades, this is more expensive but really worth it .

So please ask me if you have any question
