How to Waterproof Foam Board

Not all of us have access to Flite Test's waterproof foam board. Across the world, we're still stuck with the good old basic stuff that still gets wet and degrades over time. I tried three different products to see if any would waterproof pieces of foam board to the required degree.

Here is a summary of the experiment and it's findings.

As mentioned, three products were tested. These were clear sealer, 'Mod Podge' crafting varnish and 'Eze Dope' used for making balsa and tissue aircraft.

Each were tested by fully exposing samples of foam board to glasses of water to see if any of the products would fully protect the material.

The Mod Podge turned out to be water based which I didn't realise before, so obviously this didn't work and came off when exposed to the glass of water. 

Both the Mod Podge and the Eze Dope had to be applied with a paint brush.

The Eze Dope had a similar effect to the Mod Podge, despite the packaging stating that it was a resin.

The clear sealer was the best by far in protecting the foam board as it fully encompased all edges creating a protective casing. This is very promising as it means that it can almost completly protect normal foam board from water damage. Maybe it can be used to protect foam board boats from the eliments in the future too.
