Tile - Bluetooth Tracker

by FliteTest | September 9, 2015 | (5) Posted in Reviews

Tile is a tiny Bluetooth tracker and easy-to-use app that finds everyday items, like your phone, keys, and wallet. So, we thought we'd try it out and see if we could track down our GoPro Monkey!

Learn more about Tile here:

We attached our Tile to the GoPro Session which was attached to a selfie-stick which was attached to a monkey.

The Tile worked! We located our parachute monkey and our GoPro Session. Attaching the Tile to your R/C equipment could be a cost-effective investment to help you keep track of your stuff!

Bluetooth range is quite sad. What saved my plane lost in the wood is TELEMETRY! By putting the antenna straight and looking at the receiving signal strength of my transmitter(FrSky Taranis), looking at the precise numbers, not the lines, I was able to pin point the airplane from over 250 feet to a few feet precision. I was totally amazed. I lost 30 minutes trying to find the plane before thinking of using telemetry and .. about 5 minutes to find it after. It's also disturbing how the angle of the antenna can influence the signal quality.

The range on bluetooth is so bad because of the low power it uses. It is normal y a 3v power situation. The telemetry on your receiver that went into your radio was using at least 5v, maybe more. Therefore, more range and better information due to it being a "smarter" signal of sorts. These devices are made to be very compact, thereby requiring the smallest battery possible. Likely a rechargeable coin cell of some sort.

I larfed out loud watching the monkey's legs flapping while he was falling. That was quite hilarious! On a side note, I recently built a Bloody Baron, and I hope to maiden it soon. I suspect it will do very well, since I don't plan to hang a monkey on it. ;-)

That Monkey drop sans parachute is right up there with the best video you have EVER posted. The bloody Baron buzzing by in the background right after the monkey hit the ground was a perfectly timed accident! Love it!

You should test the range in a green corn or soybean field. The green leaves are going to attenuate the signal.

That flying monkey selfie stick looked awesome! Great idea and props to whoever came up with it haha. I watched Periscope when you were filming this episode but I couldn't wait to see the GoPro footage!
Keep it up guys!

Great idea and I bought 15 this year as stocking stuffers. It's just not adequate, yet, to replace my Walston transmitter

This is very good, but the price is a little expensive. And I realized that I was in the middle of the night, because I was in China.

You guys are teasing me like crazy here. I love the tile, and the bloody barron, and all of the other cool stuff. But, Please. For the love of all that flies: GIVE UST HE VERSA COPTER!!!!!!!. Ok Rant over. As others have said, the monkey drop was epic, and a good test of the way the tile system works. That was probably one of the best "practice examples" that could have been done. It was just silly enough to be entertaining, and yet got the point across very well. That was a great video. Keep it up. And RELEASE THE VERSA COPTER!!!!! (sorry, that one slipped out).

Great idea. Much better than what I use. Because I fly over a field of 6 foot weeds if my plane goes down it is very hard to find; so I found these little battery operated window alarms at the dollar store.
When I crash or just have a bad landing the magnet jumps off most of the time. Then it goes off with a loud alarm. It can be heard about 100 feet so I have to have a walk line to get at least that close.

I wish someone made a radio direction finder like they use on wild animals that was small and cheap of course.
