What you can do with your foamboard leftovers

I had this box with foamboard leftovers and somebody asked me: “What are you going to do with that?” my answer: “What can’t I do with these leftovers!”

The idea

I had these bits of foam where I wanted to make a simple plane out. I came up with the idea to make a ft nut ball so I just had to make a circle.

Painting the pieces

To accentuate that the plane is made out of multiple pieces I painted them all in different colors with some cheap acrylic paint.

Gluing the pieces together

I glued them together with some simple hot glue and I worked from the outside to the inside of the circle. I cut the pieces a bit so they fitted together and tried to make sure that the same colors weren’t next to each other.

Covering it

To make it strong I covered it on both sides with transparent book cover. I think it acts like the paper on the foam board. The foam without the paper is flexible and not strong.

Putting the electronics on it

I used a small motor from an old broken quad and a 30 amp esc with a  1300mah 3 cell battery.

The maiden flight

The maiden didn’t go as planned. It was a bit tail heavy and it flew backwards with the wind. Because of that it fell in a flower field 100 m further. I found it after 10 minutes of searching. Then I put the battery on the front and it flew much better. Like every nut ball it has a bit of a character and does its own thing sometimes, but that’s fine.

This was a fun project for me! So next time when you throw some stuff away ask yourself if you can do something fun with it.

If plenty and large enough, you build a plane from it! A Frankenplane like mine. Bits and pieces of crashed planes and leftovers: https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZvoFvtEqUTDuUb766

Have fun!
