Wilga-2000 Trainer Epo 1160mm

I recently purchased the Wilga-2000 Trainer EPO 1160mm from HobbyKing for around $75. The plane took about 30 minutes to assemble, and is made of EPO foam. The plane comes with all electronics installed, except for the reciever and battery. Overall, I feel that this plane will be a great trainer/parkflyer.

Final Product

Good Traits

  • Very slow, good for a beginner
  • Easy to land, due to a great glide rate
  • Very stable in the air because of the dihedral in the wing
  • EPO Construction

Bad Traits

  • Flimsy rudder, elevator and floats
  • Insufficient motor
  • Battery access

Description

  • Wingspan: 1160mm
  • Length: 888mm
  • Prop: 3 Bladed 8x6
  • Battery compartment: 72x39x34mm
  • Servos: 4 x 9g
  • Battery: 2S 7.4V 1300mAH LiPo Battery
  • Comes with Landing Gear and Floats
  • XT60 Connecters pre-installed

Possible Upgrades

  • The motor seems insufficient for the weight of the plane. If I upgrade the motor, than I will also need a higher amp esc.
  • The elevator and rudder are a little flimsy. I might reinforce them with a carbon fiber spar.
  • The floats are also flimsy. I will need to reinforce those with a truss.

Build Process

Use two screws to connect the elevator to the fuselage. Use CA or Hot Glue to secure and keep the rudder in place. There is a plastic brace that connects the carbon fiber spars of both wings, that brace will keep the wings together. Insert that brace into both wings. Next, connect the controll linkages to both the servo arm and controll horn on all of the controll surfaces and servos. Then, connect the wing to the fuselage with two screws. Slide in your landing gear or floats, and your plane is done.

Overall Thoughts

The plane was very easy to put together. It is extremely strong because of the carbon fiber and EPO construction. I am confident that this plane will teach me how to fly better. I recommend this plane to anyone who wants a good trainer.

YOU NAILED IT. I HAVE HAD ONE FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW. I JUST PUT A 3 CELL IN MINE AND CAN TAKE OFF FROM WET GRASS. I ALSO ADDED CROSS BRACING ON THE GEAR. LATER I DID REPLACE MY MOTOR AND MODIFIED THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT TO TAKE A 3 CELL 2200 PACK. AT THE SAME TIME I ADDED WING STRUTS BECAUSE THE EXTRA WEIGHT CAUSED THE WINGS TO FLEX A LITTLE TOO MUCH ON LOOPS MAKING ME NERVOUS.

I have the plane too, and like it very much!

center of gravity is about where the carbon fibre spars are.

I did a few modifications:

- I covered the elevator and rudder parts in self-adhesive covering film (oracover), now they're not bulletproof but much stronger.
- I also trailed the outlines on paper before i gleud them in to have plans from which to cut replacements when i brake them. I guess foamboard wuld work quite good, it's a bit stiffer but has the right thickness.
- another thing i did, was stabilizing the plastik thingy that holds the surface in front of the elevator (don't know the english expression) with a short piece of metal i intended to use for pushrods/landing gear, so it hasn't so much wobble. :)
- and finally I replace the single aileron servo with two 5g servos and put real hinges in the ailerons.

Recommondations for a cheap motor upgrade for the plane anyone? (Hobbyking or banggood would be perfect :) )
