"THE MULE" FPV gear hauler... 90 inch wingspan!!

Bigger is always better... in my mind.  So like my Old Fogey scratch build, I made a new plane to have some FPV fun this time. It is made out of Foam Board, Tape, and Hotglue as usual. I couldn't find any records for really large foam board planes on the internet. I did see a video of a twin tail 22 footer crashing a couple of times though. My plane is not 22 feet wide.... But it does fly. I'm sure as soon as a few viewers see this they will up me by a few inches. So for now, lets say I have the record cause this one flies and flies very well. No crashes yet.

This isnt a cheap glider by any means. It has full ailerons, rudder and elevator. Powered by a Hobbyking NTM 1400kv 35-36. I use a 9-6 to a 11-5.5 prop depending on how I feel that day. Also it is running 3s with 8800mah. With room for another 8800mah if I want to fly for more than 2 hours at 1/4 throttle.  (Is that a foam board world record too???)  With a 20" by 90" wingspan I can haul a few pounds of cargo if need be.   Yes... Pounds!

I am thinking of adding a paintball bombay soon as well since that would be quite simple with my fuselage design. The inside is so big I can actually place a 1.2 hz. antenna completely out of view.

I can fly this plane so slow that it looks like it is just hanging in the air. Once I held it into the wind at about 30 feet off the ground and held my position for about 3 minutes in a gentle breeze. The 3s packs are perfect for this size motor and plane combo. It almost feels like the more weight the better it flies. I never need more than 1/2 throttle for even loops or rolls.

The plane comes apart to make transportation easier, First I remove 4 rc car body pins from the wing supports and 4 rubber bands holding the main wing in place. Then I can remove 4 screws on the bottom and remove the tail. That leaves the main fuse by itself. Takes about 2 min to re-assemble as well.

Plenty of Video is comming as soon as the Fort Wayne, Indiana  winter winds settle down.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Plenty of Dihedral at the tips for stability.

Actually it is a Twin rudder Poly Dihedral for super steady FPV.

This tail view shows simplicity. Yes, built in hidden hinges from HK. They last a lot longer than just the paper and glue. And this design does not require tapering one side for clearance.

Doubled up wind spar has a channel cut for the 1/4 inch dowel rods to sit in. I pre drilled the dowels before glueing them in place for the body pins that retain the side supports. Remmember to glue them in place so the holes are easily accessible by the pins without the support in the way.

Here is the center of the wing. Centering is made easy with the spacers. Note the servo wires are male and female. This makes it impossible to reverse the ailerons if you are rushed to assemble it.

Side supports were used from the basket case cub as well.

Here are my four scews mounting the tail and side supports

Yeah, the fuse is 30 inches long. Thats a full size couch behind it.

Plenty of room up top for camera gear

sorry, it's not a record. I made a foamboard motorglider a while ago that had a 120" wingspan. SOOOOOOO much fun =

also, experimental airlines did a competition to see who could create the largest foamboard wingspan and one guy had like 16 feet.

So could they fly them for over an hour as well? Or 2 hours if they doubled their packs?

Hey your from Ft Wayne, I'm from Elkhart, IN. I don't miss that weather at all, been serving our country since 2006 straight out of highschool, now in hot ass Texas, I guess I do miss snow....lol

this is pretty darn cool looking!!! often wondered about ailerons on an under cambered wing but haven't yet experimented with it...how do you like them? pros/cons?

Ailerons were a afterthought. They are really not controllable by my transmitter. They are really for stabilization only while shooting video. I have them mapped to a auxiliary channel on my tx. Really it is just a dial. And the servos are running from a Orange RX 3-Axis flight stabilizer. So they remain level until wind or hard turns cause the plane to rock or shift during flight. It works to a certain degree. I can definitely see the difference in the video. A eagle tree stabilizer would work much better but I was short on funds during the build then. Since I have not flown this model much. Mainly a wing and an old fogey I enjoy more. This model is really not sporty at all. It is a floater and winds can carry it away if to strong. But I'm glad you asked the question about the ailerons. I had forgot to mention them and the stabilizer in the article. Maybe I should revisit this and add this gained knowledge? Not really sure if anyone has done this before.
