Foam Test Simple Glider

by FoamTest | July 30, 2016 | (6) Posted in Just Fun

The simple glider is a, well, very simple build that can be done in under an hour and produces hours of fun for next to nothing! The only materials needed are hot glue, tape, a couple of pennies, and of course, foamboard.

Review/ flight video

I don't have digital plans for this model yet but here is a photo of the plans. The center section of the wing is a 8" by 3 1/8" and the wingtips are 4" by 3 1/8". The horizontal stabilizer is 2" by 5". Finally the fuse length is 10". You can experiment with fuse designs, but this photo will give you a basic design of the fuse I used and had success with. (Excuse the pencil marks on the template I was using them to scale the plans up 200% to make a powered version, more details near the bottom!)

Next to my FT Mustang for scale.

Here are the 4 pennies of nose weight.

You can remove the paper on the horizontal stabilizer to help with weight. Surprisingly it helps a lot!

I also used the foam curving technique to make the under cambered airfoil.

These are most of the plans for the 200% simple glider. If there is enough demand I might do an artical on that as well. (I have not actually built this model yet, I will, but I just need the time to.)

It will run if of a swappable power pack B.

Pease note this version only requires 2 pennies for nose weight.

I have built the 200% powered version, and put it on my YouTube channel if you would like to see it! It uses the power pack A not B.
Happy flying!

Great job! I think I'm going to build one of these with my 2 and 6 year old sons! I also have some old brushed motors and small servos, might try to make a powered version...

I can't wait to try and build one of these! I've been looking for a simple foam chuck glider for a while. Thanks!

I will when I can, but until then you could just use a 10" Long rectangle for the fuse.

Love your design! My wife teaches kindergarten and this is a great way to introduce little pilots to the fun of flying! I made printable plans based on your picture and dimensions... would love to provide them to you within your article somehow... let me know the best way to get them to you. Congrats!

Thank you for the compliment, and for sharing the hobby! You could email me at foamtestyt@gmail.com
I'll make sure to put it in the article, and give you credit for the plans.
And sorry for the late reply, I have been busy with school lately.
